Accuracy improvement by truing 700 action

The shooting accuracy difference when 4 thousands of an inch of rear bolt movement is eliminated is extremely hard to detect. The action does 'feel' nicer and obviously shooter confidence will be up.

Bill Leeper 'pioneered' an easy way to do this. Dovetails cut into the bolt body and filled with steel dovetail material and machined down to fit the action.

For Rem 700's, Sam Adams, Truro, trues bolt face, squares receiver, recuts threads
-.020" and laps lugs for $125. He has the proper jigs and tools. He has done many dozens or more rifles for police departments, national champions and plenty of FClass, Precision Rifle and TR shooters.

This looks like a slick way of accomplishing the goal, I t appears like it would be considerably quicker then sleeving. Do you make your dove tail insert or can you purchase it somewhere. I would like to try this method. thanks for sharing and by the way I enjoy your responses to the many questions as you are answering with proven results no just opinions .

That Bill, he be a very smart lad. Now that adaptation are called Borden bumps if I am not mistaken. Wonder if they are paying Bill any royalties:HR:

Anyway, lots of this stuff has been tried over the many decades that the Rem has been in competitive useage. Nothing new but the new methods of tweaking the action are very interesting.

New over sized bolt bodies, various inserts and sleeves. All excellent ways of keeping various bits and parts where they belong when the trigger gets pulled.

I think the biggest benefit of bolt sleeving is to maintain that lock up at very high pressures. Slight movements in the bolt can leave the case head unsupported and that can cause the case to move in wonky manners.

Banana cases can be formed which can lead to ever increasing headaches. And wonky cases don't keep the bullet in alignment with the bore, etc, etc.

Does it really do much for accuracy? until you want to drop consistently into the 1's and 0's, likely no BUT it will keep those "BR" loads from bending up the brass.

Actions role is to contain that pressure after igniting it. Beyond that, the accuracy is really in the barrel, chamber, load, bedding and how the shot was delivered.

Brownell's have dovetail filler stock in lengths, also the .359 "dovetail cutter..

Is that just for the action truing and send it back to the customer or an extra $125 if a match barrel is installed?

I know I ain't making any money at this, but I don't want to rip anyone off either. Some charge $250 alone for blueprinting alone, but I think that's a tad stiff.

In my opinion Rem 700 action requires four things to be checked out only. Bolt face needs to be sguare to the bolt body, action face needs to be sguare to the bolt body, chamber needs to be cut straight and bolt lugs need to bear the load equally. As long as the barrel thread fit in receiver has some slop to it (all the factory threads do) the action face and barrel shoulder will make sure that the aligment is true when tightened. Single point cutting the action threads, bolt lugs supports, bushing the bolt and so on are extras to keep the users peace of mind. Enlarging the factory receiver threads will preclude useing affordable (cheap?) factory take off barrels for rebarreling hunting rifles. If somebody is prepared to be stuck with $400+target custom super duper barrels plus $500+ for gunsmithing work+$1000 stock+$1500 target scope+$1500 for spotting scope+untold hundreds of dollars for special brass, bullets and other "nessesary" equipment then $500 over and above trued Rem mod 700 price for custom action really makes a lot of sense. My 2c....
