Accuracy loss after cleaning. Question?

I’d just give it another go after it’s clean.
That's the plan. I have a few odds and ends 7mm bullets here I'll use to foul the bore again then try that load again.

I will say that the rifle seemed a bit fussy at 1st. The gunsmith shot it some and reported that I did not like WW760 and 160gr Speers. I thought it might be the bullets so tried others with the 760 to no avail.

Ball powder is not user-friendly. A temperature stable powder is more suffice. I'm aware that you used Varget, however try another extreme powder, equally, attempt Alliant powder. OR, use you're current Varget load and wait for realistic hunting temperatures. I really don't shoot until late September, when morning temperatures are at zero celsius.

Paul, this is a load that has work great in many of my 7X57 rifles, maybe give it a try if you have access to the powder;

- Full; Hornady 150 NBT/154 RCL/SST, 51.0C/RL-19, R-P/CCI-250, 3.070” ( USE 50.0*)

We don't get a lot of crazy heat here on the east coast esp at our range which overlooks the ocean. When it does get hot, I have in the past kept my ammo in a small cooler with freezer packs trying to keep it closer to temps I would see during hunting season. On a normal day, I will shoot early and keep my ammo in the shade when not in use.

Here's a thread on that subject .... https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...06/temperature-sensitive-powders#Post19570706

I pretty much stick with IMR and Hodgdon powders. Other than that keg of 760, that's all I can get here. Gunshow next weekend. I'll see what's there.

Hey Paul, if your looking for a particular powder just let me know. No guarantees but i have a large variety and access thru a LGS for most. What it costs me is what youll pay plus the shipping. Beauty buck bye the way.

Thanks for that. I have some other powders here that I can try. H4350 and H4831SC as well as some D4064. I'll go through that list before buying more. :)

If theres something out of your cookie jar and I have it in stock Ill be glad to send you enough to try and see if its the happy pill for your particular smoke pole. Just the shipping is good. What are you actually loading for?

Not really looking for anything right now. For now I need to figure out why the accuracy with a formerly good load has gone south. I have lots of Varget and 120gr NBTs so that's my route for now. I cleaned to bore 3x with WipeOut and checked everything else. I'm going to runs some fouler shots through it a see where it goes from there.

Thanks for the offer. It's very much appreciated, but I need to stay on the trail for now. :)

If your still getting blue on your patches Id keep cleaning. Without lying Ive spent three dayx cleaming a barrel!! If your still getting blue keep putting the CR10 too it. That sXXt works just like sweets 7.62. Just oil that barrel when ur done getting claen patches.

So here's the update .... I cleaned it 3x with Wipe Out. Patches were coming out white. I shot 10 fouler loads from some odds and ends bullets on hand and then shot 9 of my deer loads that I have been using all along. This is the last three. The 6 others that I shot prior gave similar results. This is pretty much the same accuracy I had before I started this cleaning mistake. I might expect this to tighten up a bit after more shooting.

Note to self ..... Don't clean a rifle until accuracy drops off! :)

We target shooters worry about accuracy after cleaning because a match starts with 2 sighters and if those are not indicative of the group then they start us off on the wrong sight setting.

I use Sweets or Wipe-Out to clean the barrel. To get the residue out, I wipe the barrel with a mild abrasive cleaner like Rem-Clean or that stuff in a toothpaste tube. The RemClean gets all the Wipe-Out and also takes care of any carbon rings. Then I clean that out with an oiled patch, followed y a dry patch.

I have also observed that my barrel takes 3 shots to become consistent for text 100 shots. The first 3 shots group about 3/4 MOA and then about 1/2 thereafter. You could always fire some fouling shots before gong on a hunt.

After this episode, I bought a Teslong borescope. It has been a bit of a shocker on so-called clean bore. I used Wipe-Out and Barnes CR-10 thinking that as long as the patches are coming out clean, I was GTG. I really didn't know much about carbon in the grooves and as a ring forward of the case mouth. I am not a competitive target shooter so was a bit isolated from learned folk and thus a bit ignorant about such things. Been watching a lot of You-Tube on the subject over the last two weeks.

that ol 760 carbine i bought from you few years back was exactly like this, few more here as well that seem to prefer being fouled. just keep launching them paul ol buddy cheers.
