Accuracy of a semi?

Years back I ended up with a ton of free 52gr flat based bullets. They shot shockingly well at 100m.... As long as I didn't push them they were fine out of my 1/8 twist. Just enough powder to have them locking the bolt open and they grouped very well. Push them normally and they were useless from my rifle.

For 25m positional shooting practice they were perfect. For SR they were useless.

New year, new me. Told my wife I would try to be less cranky if my parts import happened.

2 months in the making with the cp strike and import delays. I put it together tonight then got high rattle-canning it in my shop. Looks like $#!+, but I bet it will go like a raped ape.

In case anyone is interested, it's an ATRS receiver, Shield barrel, TT trigger, and PRI mk12 parts that the dummies at cbsa didn't confiscate.

Generic A2 stock with old buffer and spring from my SP1 because I like the sound, fagpul grip and 6-24 Bushnell Match Pro in a gross Vortex mount.

Nice looking rig.

A little UFI since you’re talking accuracy in a semi-auto. Bill Wylde came up with the .223 Wylde chamber when trying to wring the most accuracy shooting service rifle matches in Canada in the early 80s as even civilian competitors needed to use IVI ball ammo at the time.

An old post where the man himself chimed in: https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...reamed-to-5-56-223-wylde.285393/#post-2635601

Well I don't know much about the barrel, it was pretty much the only 18.6 I could find in Canada at the time. It's advertised as a match grade barrel with a match chamber that accepts all .223/5.56 ammunition. 1:8 twist so I figured I'd give it a try.

Time will tell, it replaced a 20" 1:12 SAK marked pencil barrel I had on the rifle before.

Sounds like it could be a Wylde chamber. It’s about the only one designed for .223 and 5.56mm.

I suspect a lot of knowledges of what we know of "precision" semi in 223 and 308 are on the way out of expiration. 308 is in the last leg - it is inferior to 6.8 as a MG/BR round and 6.5CM as a PR/BR round. Commercially 223 won't be going anywhere but it will be more of a purely action comp round / self defence rd in the US and remain a hunting/pest control cartridge as it is now.

With the MRGG-S awarded and MRGG-A coming soon, and the army attempt to go back to a battle rifle and battle rifle size LMG/SAW, the next 10 years of precision platform and ammo will be all about 6.X something Semi auto.

Since I have handloaded ever since I started shooting over 40 years ago I almost never shoot factory ammo but I can tell you that I built an AR with a 24" stainless bull barrel and free float handguard. These were not, however, ultra high grade parts, just standard manufacture items including the internals. I added a Rock River semi-match trigger (only cost me about $75) and made up a variety of handloads with various powders I had around (3031, BLC-2, Accurate 2230, Benchmark, etc.). As the barrel is 1:10 I shot lighter bullets (mainly 52 gr. Match Kings & Hornady AMAX).

At 100 yards every combination I tried shot at least 1/2 MOA 5 shot groups and the best (52 gr. SMK with 24 gr. of Benchmark) did .25 MOA consistently.

Yep, semi-autos can be extremely accurate and for not a lot of money.
