Accuracy of factory rifled slugs?

Ok, so I tested over the week end a couple of different brands of "rifled slugs" out of my 870P smooth bore with rifle sights.

I was shooting at 50 meters with rifle sights and out of a smooth bore barrel with fixed improved cylinder choke.

And I was a bit surprised about the results ... I mean depending on the brand I got everything from an 11" group to a 3" group at 50 meters.

Here the gun ...

I also tested the Sellier & Bellot Sport Slug and which I love ... and I got a 4" group as usual. Those slugs I know well ... and I wanted to test the accuracy of other brands.

I was really disappointed about the Challenger slug ... I had high hopes ... but I had one misfire (primer got struck but round did not go off) ... and they gave me the worst group.

Also, now I am curious as to what group the Remington Slugger High Velocity would give me at 100 meters?

But my question to you folks is ... does this represent your experience? Comments? Input?

Thanks,
Faustus

I tested a bunch in my versamax just lining up the 2 beads in a figure 8. I did 5 shot groups and settled on the remingtons both 2.75 and 3 inch. they did best although the federal truballs matched them. these 3 did 4 inch grouos for 5 shots at 50 yards. challengers, Winchesters, did well but not as good no more than 6 or 7 inches though.

Each brand of slug and each barrel will give different results. The only way to find one that works well for you is to do what you did. Even the fellas shooting rifled barrels and sabot rounds have found that all slugs do not shoot the same out different guns. Good report. I think Slugger would be your choice. You have the high comb stock so the addition of a scope could improve your groups out at 75 yards and beyond.

Best results I had were with Winchester Rackmasters. I believe they are no longer available though (I bought a bunch, enough to last me a long time). Touching at 50m, 3" at 75m. My gun is an old 870 Wingmaster with the same abrrel as yours (rifle sights, smoothbore).

I've been playing with slugs & different guns for years. The one constant to this game is each gun either really likes a particular load, or really hates it. And it varies from gun to gun, even if they are the same make. Go figure??? Not often you find much middle ground. My 2 current ones are a custom Cooey single shot shortened to 20" with a screw in rifled choke tube, 4" long, with a 2X scope. It really loves the Challenger slugs, will group 3" at 100 with scope but at 5lbs is a bloody bear to shoot. Hated Rem sabots, would group 12" at 25 yards, all of them sideways! It's a sentimental fav though. My other rig is a rifled 24" 870, likes the Hornady SST sabots. Will shoot the challengers fine but these lead up the barrel. Wears a Knoxx stock and is much more comfortable to shoot. Only way to tell is to play. Have fun and buy some Rub A535, your gonna need it!
