accuracy of mini14

I had a Mini 14 184 series with a 4-12x40 scope on it. Worked just fine. Many coyotes (23 in 2009) never complained. Anyone who says ther are a POS, has never taken the time to reload for it and see what it's true potential is. I believe it's the shooter, not the gun. A bad carpenter ALWAYS blames his tools. The only reason for me selling mine was the fact that I'm a bolt guy more than a semi guy.

I am starting to evolve into a bolt guy. I will keep my Mini but now have a bolt for almost any season.

Rem 700 Mountain DM .270
CZ 455LUX .22
Tikka T3Lite Stainless .223
Savage 11 .308

Next will be a Sako Finnlight 7mm-08 Stainless

The whole focus on group size is overrated unless target shooting and practice.
The only shot that counts is the first one, thay are fun

"...it's not even legal in Southern Ontario anyway..." Whoever told you that is confused. Our daft MNR says any 'centre fire' is legal for deer.
In any case, factory .223 ammo is usually sold loaded with varmint bullets. Those are not suitable for deer. .223 can certainly be reloaded with bullets that are suitable though. The Mini-14 Ranch rifling twist will work with 'em too.
The rifle is still not accurate enough for the money demanded.

The newer minis are a better mini. They are more accurate. For a long time now I felt that the only thing really missing was a better trigger but it seemed no one in Canada did them. I have found a fellow on this forum that performs top notch work on the mini trigger group. :canadaFlag: He has done two now for me and they have made a huge difference on my minis. He goes under the name Le Jarret Noir on CGN. His turnaround time is fast and his prices are very reasonable. If you want a better mini, send him your trigger group.

Also, either the mini 30 or the 6.8 SPC mini is more than adequate for deer and varmints, IMO.

i bought a mini 14 a few weeks ago it's a 183 series.. took it home.. went and got the cheapest shells i could buy and fired a shot.. that rear sight is just stupidly small i dont care who you are no one can shoot a group with it.. so i drilled it out.. i proceeded to fire 150 shots through it.. the gun shoots 5 shot business card sized groups at a hundred yards with iron sights and a hot barrel.. my whole life i didnt buy one because people say they are junk and i get it home and its a tack driver.. 5 popcans in a row at a hundred yards is awesome.. and i firmly believe that the mini 14 is the only gun ive ever owned that i would trust my life to.. ive owned alot of guns..
you want to know what gun is an innacurate pos.. the winchester model 94.. ill bet good money my mini will out shoot anyones pre 64 any day

Sounds like one hell of a fun rifle to shoot.
I know a few guys here on the Queen Charlotte's that have older mini14 they love them for hunting Queen Charlotte islands deer.
223 works wonderfully on the little deer we have and it is perfectly legal in BC.
Way to go now I'm thinking a stainless steel 223 mini is in my future LOL

Mine shoots inside 2" at 100 yards all day long. The Mini-14 is not the most accurate but give the "minute of barn door" BS a rest. If those are your best results, maybe you should take some shooting lessons from my 12 year old son.

Mini-14 is not a good deer gun.

Agreed! I love my Mini-14. I have a never 580 series version with the garand style front sight. Would be a good deer/ bush gun if you got the 6.8 rem version. The Mini-30 would be a good alternative to the Mini-14 for deer hunting.

A mini for deer? Certainly not something I would use, but that's because of the cartridge, not the gun. I've had several over the years, and while none were precision target rifles, all could be made to shoot sufficiently well to be used as 200-yard coyote guns. They were all stone-axe reliable, and accounted for a goodly number of coyotes, as well as some chucks and crows. Minis are fun to shoot, plain and simple. One of their biggest problems is the fact that owners want to buy the cheapest crap ammo that they can find, and then complain about accuracy.

Gitrdun, are there any other rifles regarding which you have such strong opinions without having any actual experience with the gun in question? If so, please let us know...it will be useful to those of us who are so inept that we have to actually shoot and use a gun to be able to make a worthwhile assessment of it.

223 not good for deer?
When I am low on cash I still grab 22lr for deer I know some will get excited about it but cash is tight here on the island.
More deer killed with 22lr then any other caliber here on the Queen Charlotte islands!
This year I have a SKS for when my pockets are empty nothing wrong with the 223 just have to get closer for a one-shot kill!

There are folks in downtown Toronto sleeping in cardboard boxes under the Gardner. That doesn't make it a desirable option, or one that I would choose.

The fact that someone makes a choice, whether due to lack of alternatives or merely poor judgement, is hardly sufficient evidence that the choice is a good one.

Couple years ago I had a unexpected layoff working in a mine up in northern BC.
I had no other choice but to use 22lr for deer hunting I made one trip hunted 12 hours legal daylight hours.
I shot over 20 dear with my little 22lr they were all clean kills one shot one deer!
Before anyone gets excited I'm Haida Indian and our deer are small and I hunt for my family as well as the community.
Here on the Queen Charlotte islands we are running 75% unemployment.
I think if Toronto had the unemployment we have there would be riots in the streets!
