I am thinking of picking up a 18.5" barreled shotgun and accesorize it up. I was just wondering what the effective range would be. I am thinking of getting a maverick 88 so it would be smooth bore 3" chamber.

Thanks!
Evan

It will definitely have plenty of effective range for bears or washing machines, old fuel tanks and ceiling fans. The latter of which I speak I have experience with. :D

I've got a Mossberg 500A with a 18" Slugster barrel. I can get 3-4" groupings with Winchester Super X 2 3/4" slugs and slightly smaller groupings with the Federal Premium tru-ball slugs (both at 100 yards). I'm sure it can get better groupings, but it's operator error. (more like, eh? It's close enough for me).

i can hit a man sized target at 200m 4 out of 5 times standing with my 870 marine magnum.
it all depends.
hitting the target at 200 with out sites is very difacult, and im sure there was some luck involved.
at 100m they are comfortably on target though.

Whoops...don't know why I didn't mention this. I'm thinking of using it for a range/camp gun, so bears at close range. But i'd also like to use it as a bush gun for deer.

I had no trouble hitting the bullseye of an 8.5x11 target almost every time out to 30 yards with a stock 870 Express 18".... no sights, just that little bead thing on the front. Out to 50 yards hitting the sheet was no problem.

I was QUITE surprised at the accuracy and actual ease of shooting on-target... and this was my first and only time shooting a shotgun.
