Accuracy of the Ruger M77???

I have a Ruger M77 MkII in 30-06. We are pushing 180 grain Nosler Partitions down range. Its shooting bullseye at 100 yards right now. Going back to the range to raise it up about half an inch.
 
My old M-77 (a 7x57 bought in 1976) will shoot 3 shots in 3/4" at 100 yards with its favourite ammo, and everything else ranges between an inch and an inch and a quarter. Good enough for hunting, for sure, but my Tikkas tend to shoot tighter. I've had newer Rugers that have shot very well, though.

I think that their reputation for "so so" accuracy has something to do with their barrels being out-sourced in the early years .
 
Just got my M77 MKII 7mm-08... she's a looker!!

But what is with this funky safety, it seems to have 3 positions, like safe, safer and safest. Seems like a good system, I am just concerned when the time comes to shoot my first deer or my next bear, I might slip it halfway and miss my shot.

How do you guys use this safety?

One setting should allow you to open the bolt and remove/add a cartridge without taking the safety "off". One is "off" position and one is "on" with bolt locked closed.

I pick up what your saying/inferring.... thing of it was she was/is a great gun. I should've never sold it... but what came along for me was a minty Rem 700 Classic and a NIB Tikka 695 stainless synthetic both in 6.5x55mm. The Tikka is a tack driver and the Rem 700 is a safe queen. Should've kept that Ruger, though.

Have been contemplating getting another MkII, this time in .260 Rem, though just for giggles... :redface:

I know its hard for a true gunnut to hang on to a gun forever, when there's another gun on the horizon.:) At least several have kept a good shooter going and not hoarded it.:rockOn:

Geez, you guys made me check the gun safe!!! Yep, it's still there! I almost bought Dizzy's for my youngest daughter, just did not have the cash at the time...:(

There is something about those MkII's in 6.5x55mm... must've been a good run... never heard of one that wasn't great right outta the box...

Now I am depressed.... :( :redface:

Some of the Ruger barrels like contact with the stock. Shoot it first as you can always remove material later - it's harder to put it back on.;)
