accuracy out of norc m14/305

I'm just curious what kind of accuracy a guy can get out of a norinco m14 @100 yards. Im thinking of getting one and setting it up for that kind of distance shooting. Any and all advice welcomed! Yes I know far better rifles for the job but m14 is just far too ###y.

Some simple little things, (one needn't spend too much/lots) and you might find yourself in possession of a decently accurate M305.

Reloading is 'almost' a must, I find it helps.
 
To be even more realistic, 3" groups with anything resembling consistency. Recently I read on the M14.com forum Lazerus2000, who has done it all with M14s, and I mean all, and I paraphrase from memory, saying he'd only ever seen one true 1" / MOA M14.

Groups don't mean the best one you can post online, it's an average, saying a gun is a 1" gun means it will almost always do better than that, and at worst shoot 1". Good Norcs, and most M14's for that matter are realistically 3" guns.
 
Just know you will need to upgrade to a USGI m14 or Garand rear sight , the factory one is crap dont even bother wasting ammo with it .. theres a couple guys who sell them on the EE for $100.. They vary out of box accuracy but if your stars align you can get a tac driver , if not there are some accurizing tips in the stickys, like shimming your gas system and other tricks ..
 
With mostly stock parts, but a unitized gas system, bedded glass stock, upgraded op rod spring guide, scoped, I get 1.5" 5 shot groups at 100 yards with the best ammo I can find or make. After around 15 rapid shots, the point of impact starts to wander. I think it's due to heat buildup in the barrel. I love my norinco m14s, but its no tack driver. More a hit an orange at 100 yardssort of gun.
 
There was a guy at the range setting up, who said his shot clover leafs with surplus ammo, but he refused to shoot until I left.
 
Silly bugger...If mine was shootin clover leafs all the time Id be showing that off to everybody.
Next time Im down the range Im gonna shoot some clover leafs, theres a big patch of em down by the 50 yd targets.

I suppose some people need to upgrade the rear sight, but not everybody does. My factory sight needed to be cleaned and loctited, but it has been fine for well over 1000 rounds now. I think you would be foolish as hell to throw your factory sight and $100 away without trying it to see if it works.
 
Well said. A lot of guys, wimmin too I guess,buy a Norc and immediately start replacing bits and pieces without even firing it. Some even buy all the replacement parts before they buy the gun.
Suck it and see first, you might be pleasantly surprised. And at the end of the day wether you spend 500 bucks or close to 2000, youll still be getting 1.5 at best and more likely 2 to 3 inch groups. That's what this gun does..and it does it well.
 
Thanks for info so far guys just one question is it 3 inch groups out of box or with new stock and or other upgrades? also what kind of ammo? I'm not expecting to get .5 inch groupings with the rifle I just want to make sure when I go shooting ill be able to hit the target from roughly 100 yards.
 
I got some very poor results, like 3-5" groups with some surplus 7.62 ammo. It was also corrosive, so I ditched it to someone else who wants to tear down and clean their m14. I like hand loads with 150-168 grain bullets, or Federal Blue box 150 grain 308 ammo. It was nice when you could get the Federal ammo for around $12 a box. It shot real nice.
 
I recently got a gently used one. Looks stock except a GI fibreglass stock and a scope. It consistantly shoots 1.5-2" 5 shot groups with handloads. That's with a gas lock that doesn't hand tighten until about 7 o'clock and a noticeably loose gas system. I have shims on the way so I can't wait to see what it'll do after some tweaking. Even if it doesn't get any better I'm happy. I plan to remove the scope and use the irons so I'll be happy if I can maintain the 1.5" groups. Biggest thing I notice is that there is usually a flyer that almost doubles the group size, many of the groups are less than an inch if you take out the flyer. If I could cure that it would be more like 1-1.5" groups.
 
That damned flyer !! Glad you mentioned it, I keep forgetting, but its there all the time.
I have a plan tho, a plan so cunning you could pin a tail on it and call it a rat.
Next time Im doing groups Im going to refill the mag after 2 shots 3 shots etc and see if that makes any difference to a 5 shot group.
Probably somebodys already tried this.....but I haven't.
 
Yes I've heard different theories from it being the first shot that chambers differently to it being the last shot because the mag pressure under the bolt is different. I haven't had time or ammo to play yet but someday. Not 100% sure but I think it is typically my fifth shot that is the flyer.
