accuracy out of norc m14/305

Hey fwm, where did you get your shims, if you don't mind my asking? I have a 22" model that's pretty tight and shooting fine but just like yours, my shorty's gas lock also tightens only past 7 o'clock. I'd like to shim it and see if it shoots as good as the longer one. Here's a target from my 22 incher (look for post#109 towards the bottom of the page):

Another fix for that issue is to remove your gas locking ring ,flip it over and reinstall .This will sometimes give you the same results as shimming will .

Yup, chalkriver just mentioned the 180* fix. Do that first. If you really must have a set of 5 shims, I'll be happy to take yer $ 5.00 :D

I really would rather you 180* that gas cylinder lock, much cheaper that way.

My USGI M14 rifles would often take up to 4 or 5 shims. Until I learned to buy a crapload of USGI gas cylinder locks and custom fit/trial & error each lock until they would bottom out at around 5 and plastic hammer to 6 (bottom dead center).

Cheers,
Barney

"...who said his..." Only when there's nobody around?
"...Any and all advice welcomed!..." What do you want to do with one? Buy one anyway, but it ain't about ###.

Thanks every body, and thanks Hungry. I haven't hammered off my FH, yet, I was waiting for the defunct Ottawa clinic to do it. But I will definitely try the 180* trick, once I do take it off, specially now that I've read something from a Gus something posted on another site. He explains that there actually is really a front and back side to the gas lock in the original design. So, hopefully that Chinese kid just installed my shorty's lock upside down. :)

Some days I shoot better than others, this was today:

Remington Premier Match 168gr at 50 yards with iron sights (stoopid flyer):

Norc 145gr FMJ at 50 yards (left target) and 100 yards (right target) with iron sights:

The rifle is a 2011 Norinco M305 Shorty with Sadlak op-rod spring guide, USGI op-rod spring, Sadlak extended mag-release, USGI Garand rear sight, SAI NM flash hider, and walnut stock & hand guard. Headspace is 1.638, round count is ~1500.

More Norcs:

Pop! Those things look great! Which one's the one you just picked up? Still waiting on my steel to come - I'll let you know when it does. Then you gotta bring your stable out to my range. I made a first round hit on my 600 yard plate the other day with irons. I was, of course, alone, so it's just as good as fantasy. But you could come out and giggle at me while I try to do it again.:D

Thanks! Don't tell anyone, but there were a few targets I didn't take pictures of ;)

I'm really looking forward to heading out to your place, I'd love to stretch these guys out to 600 yards and see what happens (or maybe scare a few gophers if you've got some hanging around this year).

The new one is the one with the Krylon-green stock and the M14.ca hand guard. Note to self: a red-dot and an orange target are not the easiest combination to see for 40-something eyes. The SHG mount was rock-solid though, I'm really impressed with it.

I was kind of disappointed with my scoped set-up though. I was getting fairly consistent 4" groups out of it with irons and Norc ammo, and when I tried it yesterday with the scope I couldn't shrink them down past 5-6". I tore it down when I got home and it looks like the bolt I used for the bipod mount was pressing on the gas tube, so I'm hoping that was the problem. I ground it down and I'll try again on the weekend and see.

Your secret's safe with me. I started running my mouth here a few months ago about getting close to that 1" at 100 mark and was going to try a few things to get the old girl to do a bit better but I've kind of set it aside for the time being. I've been chipping away at loads and driver improvements for my LR rig ever since. Would be good to get into 'battle rifle mode' again soon and have some fun.

I'll be back at the range by Wednesday and likely through the weekend, so if you get a chance, come on out and we'll see if we can't get some more good pics for this thread!

Hi guys! no m305 in my collection. But, want to add one to the collection sooner than later. All WW2 and after red rifles(mosin m44/svt40/SKS and a full battle dress 303, but just got back into shooting in Feb 2013 and started the collection then. Would love to get together at the range sometime and check out your m14's/m305's and do some shooting with you fellows. Hope to see ya around!

Cheers

Thanks for info so far guys just one question is it 3 inch groups out of box or with new stock and or other upgrades? also what kind of ammo? I'm not expecting to get .5 inch groupings with the rifle I just want to make sure when I go shooting ill be able to hit the target from roughly 100 yards.

Mine doesn't have much for upgrades, just some fixes for the oft-inevitable issues that Norincos have when leaving the factory. But one thing it did need to improve the accuracy was use. Out of the box, it was shooting groups of 3-8 MOA. After 1000 rounds fired, it is now consistently 3-4 MOA. A settling in period was essential.

Mine did 1.5 inches @ 100y out of the box, but I've tightened it up since and started reloading, I'll know if it does better once I get the new scope mounted but I'm not expecting much.

How about a 12x12 inch steel gong at 750 meters ringing it 4 out of 5 times in 10-15 kph cross winds.
:p
Oh ya and it's a Nork reciver to boot ;)

How does the LRB do? Are you using it scoped or iron-sights only?

LRB was 1 to1.5 with factory federal, With some tweaked hand loads shooting berger 168 hunting VLD its sub moa.

I did both irons and a 2.5X10 vortex viper PST. and my friend had a bushnel trophy on his, same results. both my guns started 2moa ish then were over 8 within 100 rounds. never could get them back under even with shimming, triger jobs, NM op rod guides, fixing the op rod guides and even bedding the recievers. my friends never got much better either. One friend gave me the rifle, I tweaked it, got it shooting a bit better (8 inch from over 12 inch groups) but hes has since just thrown it in a closet and forgotten about it. the last bad one I'm not sure what hes doing with it, I don't think he cares he fires it once or twice a year a couple boxes if that. the decent tweaked one got sold when my other friend bought the LRB.

Hey Lord did you have to go thru Armtac to get your LRB M14 or did you went straight to LRB to get your rifle?

I looked in the Armtac website and they are all sold out :(
