accuracy question

I just got back from the range with the new .45cal cva optima pro inline. I purchased 195gr. powerbelts and loaded 100gr. pyrodex pellets and sighted in the rifle with a scope. What kind of accuracy could i expect with this setup? I shot 10 rounds and ran short of daylight..but still wasnt driving tacks by any means. What should i be happy with?
 
never going to get precission rifle groups with it at 100 yards. but i wouldent be to surprised to see groups between rifled shotgun slugs and a general hunting rifle. so from an inch to 2-3 inches at 100 yards depending on the shooter and quality of gun.
 
I was using a bench rest and was very steady. And A 4x12 bushnell banner scope. Another question i had was how many shots should i take before i clean the bore? I was shooting 3 and then running a wet patch through...

No reason not to shoot 1.5 inches with any scoped muzzleloader. Some muzzleloaders just keep spitting accurate shots without cleaning and others require a wet/dry patch between each round. No way to tell till you try. If you aren't getting that type of accuracy, time to try another bullet!
 
I shoot 50 cal not 45 but this is my average. With a 250 gr hornady sst and 100 gr pyrodex pellets I average around a 3" group at 100 meters (110 yrds).

When I first started shooting my inline my groups were erratic. Sometimes 3-4 inches sometimes as bad as 10". I tried 4 or 5 different bullet/sabots and settled on the 250 and 300 Hornady SST's. They shoot excellent IMO...and are fairly easy to load. So keep on shooting and I am sure your groups will improve to where you are satisfied. Your rifle may like an 80 gr load better, it might like a different bullet down the pipe. Time will tell, try different loads and bullets. Pellets are nice to use but I prefer Loose Pyrodex powder. You can tune your loads alot easier. Either way enjoy your muzzleloader.

Even if you shot an identical weight bullet in a different brand/style you'd likely have to adjust your scope....the answer is yes!
 
Powr belts have a good rep for accurcy so you could expect that 1.5" group. The .45 cal doesn't have a greta rep accuracy and alot depends on the rifle twist. 1-28" works well for 50 cals with sabots, 1:20" works best for .45 cals and bore sized coniclas like the power belt.

switch to a loose powder "clear shot" or 777 and start with 75 gr by volume of powder and work up loads from there. i found 85 gr of clear shot in my Rem in-line puts 385 gr Hornady 50 cal sabots into 1.25" @ 100m easily

Personally, I'd try a sabot but if you stay with the Powerbelts, I'd go heavier. No reason you shouldn't be able to find a bullet that shoots well in front of two pellets.

Each gun is as unique as a woman....only they know what they want and you need to keep feeding them till you find out. What works for others may be a disaster for you.

Yup, definitely one of the dangers of the .45. For a gun to shoot bore size conicals well, it needs to have very exact tolerances in the barrel. White rifles are famous for this....CVAs are not. Sabots are far more forgiving in barrels not manufactured to tight tolerances........that's why I'd try sabots.
 
....and once you have a decent group and get the scope tuned just rite... clean your rifle like you would when you store it, THEN reload and see where that first shot hit's... my hawken shoot's 3" left consistently at 50 yard's with a clean bore... spit patch after the first shot and it's bang on...
some rifle's do strange thing's when they are clean...
 
think i solved my problem...bought another pack of powerbelts this time 275gr. hp's...right away i noticed tight groups...so i dialed the scope in and bang on with good 1" groups. And at 100yards still bang on...im happy with that:)

Ya, heavier equals longer equals more bullet in contact with the lands......glad to hear you got it worked out.
