hello there.
im fairly new to this sport but was asked to join the local target team. i already have a .40 and now require a .22.

id like to buy a simple looking, solid and accurate .22 that looks like a gun. please do not recommend fancy looking guns since i dont want to look like im trying too hard and its also very difficult to do cutouts on the foam that holds my guns in place.

rugers w/ bull seem like a great bang for the buck but everyone has these. sw41s are a good weight and feel but too expensive. izh35 doesnt lock open, inconvenient.

any other recommendations...models and pricing if you dont mind: thanks a lot.

If you are buying the gun for target work... the IZH35 is pretty hard to beat! My spouse as one, it shoots just as good as my GSP, for $1500 less...

By the way, none of the high end target gun lock open after the last round (unless you can find some early GSP from the 70's). The reason for this been that a slide that accidently lock open in a match does not qualify as an alliby... so the remaining rounds in the magazine count as miss :|

If you are looking for a more "conventional" looking pistol, you can try finding a use Hammerli 207 and 208... High-Standard also made some nice pistol...

Safe shooting,
Mike.

If this is the sport I am thinking of you are welcome to it. What sport am I thinking of? The 22 shooting where you hold a target pistol out there for long periods and shoot about every 60 seconds etc. None for me. I honestly do my best 22 shooting with a 4" Ruger Standard Model. Therefore, I recommend a 6" Standard Model for a Canadian because I do not you in trouble with your authorities. If this doesn't suit you look at a ruger Government Model 22, they are a great pistol. Regards and best, richard :D

If this is semi-formal shooting, you might want to inquire about which rule book you will be following... ISSF of NRA

Some guns allowed in NRA do not qualify for ISSF... barrel too long, trigger too light...

When you are talking about guns looking like a tree branch... are you refering to Free pistol?

They might look funny... but they are a whole lot of fun...

My 2cents,
Mike. :D

I don't think fightingfish was looking for a Free Pistol. I know the Steyr is a cool-looking piece but trying to hit the 2" 10ring at 50m is another thing. I know b/c I pursued Free Pistol for abt. 20yrs before giving it up due to medical reasons.

i have a smith and wesson 2206 nice looking gun and very accurate too paid $365.00 for it.They don,t make any more but if you find a used one go for it

fightingfish, if you looing for a gun looking, accurate and good price pistol, as you have mention about Ruger, these are very solid and well build gun and you can have a lot of different model and barrel length to choose from. The 5,5" bull barrel one is excellent for paper.

The Hammerli X-Esse is kind of a good looking pistol in my opinion, this is a pic of the Sport model I have but you can get a 4.5 or 6 inch barrel Non-Sport model, with or without the target grips for a lot cheaper. I am thinking around $ 700.00 new, not sure though, check with TSE, they carry them. If I remember correctly someone had one in the EE section about a month ago, try searching back a few pages.

I have had mine for a year now, it is an accurate pistol that sends any ammo I feed it down range without a single problem.

Here is what the other model looks like with the regular grips.

get a`high standard citation, if you can find one, very accurate solid pistol that is easy to maintain, used you should be able to find one for 500 to 700, less if the finish is rough,
