accurate 22lr ammo for the range

Hello gunnuterz,
I just picked up a savage BTV mark II and I plan on putting alot of rounds threw it this spring at the range. Any suggestions on a good starting point for target ammo? I have a little more experience with big game rifles and fairly new to the paper punching game.

Lupuas are said to be pretty good... any of the 3 models. I'm going to buy a bunch of different ammos and try them soon, however, I have the 10/22 - so your mkII might like another brand..
 
Go through a box each of all the target ammunitions($4-$8/50). Remington Target, Federal Gold Medal, RWS Target, Eley sport/club, SK Standard plus, etc. Just see what your local shop has and shoot them all as with rimfire you just have to try everything.

For bulk I've found that Blazer in boxes of 50 shoot good while the jumble packs are crap and Winchester 555/dynapoints/xperts all shoot well for bulk ammo but they're definitely not target grade by any means.

But really it comes down again as to what your gun likes.
 
Generally there are better brands of ammo then others but the bottom line is that you will have to try different ammo in your riflle and see what it likes. Ammo does not shoot the same in alll rifles. It is a time consuming process. When you do find ammo that your rifle likes, you may have to do it all over again when there is a considerable temperature change.

Yes indeed. SK Standard is a good place to start, with Rifle Match supposedly another step up the ladder, because it has to pass higher quality 'standards' then Standard Plus. These two pre-mentioned are loaded to 1050 fps.
SK Pistol Match Special is designed for trouble free operation in semi-auto target pistols, therefore thier velocity is a tad higher at 1150-1175 fps or thereabouts. If you were to take a pole of bullseye rimfire pistol and rifle shooters I suspect the brands mentioned would be SK, Lapua, Eley Red & Black box, RWS Match, maybe some Federal Gold Match. Remington Target has a poor reputation amongst most serious shooters.
The winningest ammo most often comes from across the big pond.

I just got CCI Mini-mags and Standards. Going to use both and see how the groupings are, and shoot through some meat to see expansion pattern etc..

What I have liked about this ammo is that it is really clean burning, easy to clean the rifle afterwards.

My Savage Mk II heavy barrel shoots very well with CCI Standard Velocity, about $35 a brick and shoots as well or better in my rifle than SK Standard + that costs over twice as much.
 
Only trouble with stuff from europe is it is hard to find, the mentioned Lapua and Eley work extremely well in all my rifles, and excellent in some. CCI Blazer boxed or fed Gold Medal are my easier to find go to's. The price can be a shock on some of the ammo, but if it ensures your going to hit what your aiming at, well worth it in my mind!
 
Target Shooting Products for Lapua, Eley, RWS. Mine likes the $51 a brick Lapua best (I think Super Club) but I tried everything under $100 a brick. It's still cheap compared to center fire.
