Any one have a load they find most accurate in their Ruger #1 45-70?
I've have some 350gr Hornady, 400gr Speer, 300gr cast, and am having 500gr cast made up.
Powders on the shelf 3031, 4895, 4350, SR4759, Tightgroup, Unique, Reloader 7, and 700x.

I really don't need more powders so if you've got a fantastic load with what some combination listed above - I would really appreciate your comments or recipe.

My favourite powder for 45-70 is 3031. Work up a load with it and I think you will be more than happy. Have worked up loads for many 45-70s and 3031 is always my starting powder. Have yet to have it fail to make a sub MOA load in any gun and many would do 1/2 MOA.

I have had amazing results with the Speer 350 using Reloader 7 in my Ruger #3. I seat them so they are 0.010" off the lands and use the crimp die to just remove the flare on the case mouth.

I have been using the data for the Speer 405 gr out of the Speer #12 manual for many years.... I have never seen anyone else prescribe that much Reloader 7 even in Ruger loads and Speer has since reduced the charge in their newer manuals. I am not seeing any pressure signs whatsoever so I am going to continue what I have been doing!

Accuracy is sub MOA and often produce 3 shot clover leafs...but recoil is very stout!

In my Uberti Highwall 25.5 grs of SR4759 behind a Lee 405 RNFP gives great accuracy and is pleasant to shoot. It doesn't fair so well in the Ruger, but it has some pitting in the bore which I believe is why it doesn't fair so well with lead bullets. As in my previous post it doesn't seem to do any harm on the accuracy front as long as I stick to jacketed bullets.

Thanks CKID - How many grains are you using with RE7? I have a Speer #5 manual so its pretty old and there is no mention of the 350gr bullets. Only 400's. And with that in mind it shows 62.0 grains of RE7 putting out 2178 fps. Thats a whopper of a load considering my 458 Win Mag pushes a 500gr at the same velocity minus 28 fps less.
