We were talking about very good shooting gopher guns. I have Rem 541s custom & 541t. My Rem yellow jacket (597 auto) now shoots well. My Bruno is too heavy for walking. Have any used the Rem 581 repeater or the Rem. scoremaster? Are mags available for them. ( TEC has the guns ). Any others your happy with that have reasonable price mags ? Note I have 10/22s, want something better :) Thanks for your views!

I'm not familiar with the rifles mentioned besides the 597.
But you want accuracy and lightweight on a budget by the sound of it.

I had a mark II G model. Wood stocked, "pencil barrel", with the accutrigger... Was a super accurate light weight gopher gun all for around $220. Drilled and tapped for weaver bases if you so choose to mount a scope.

I have a CZ 452 American with the 16" barrel that screams to be carried around. I coupled it with a 2-7x28 Leupold. She's short, lightweight, and superbly accurate. I think she's my fav.

Thanks,
Cal.

The CIL Anschutz 310 is superb if you can find one. Old Browning T1 t bolt is also a winner. My CZ THV is way too heavy to carry around, used with a portable rotating bench.

I have a CZ 513 Farmer and if you can master the trigger it is surprisingly accurate for around $400. Light weight, and very well built.

Depends what you want to do with the gun though. For sitting in one spot my custom 10/22 is my go to, but moving through the bush I take the CZ.

My 455 Standard in .22wmr is quickly becoming my favourite plinker though. With irons and the stock design it is my go to for just jumping on the quad and hitting the trails.

I have a norinco jw-15 compact with the 13" barrel and I love it. It may be short but it is very light and quite accurate 2" at 50m is quite easy and pretty much has a bull barrel so it takes forever to heat it up. The only downside I found is that its a bit loud so ear protection is almost needed.

I guess my best idea might be to look at the 50 yd challenge & see what is working there. A sportier but accurate. I do have lots of 22s, but the subject came up, so what do you guys have in the 3/4 or less at 50? PS -Eagleye any thoughts you are a good 22 source :) Thanks guys.

My wife uses the exact same gun and scope while I have the 452 with the regular barrel. Both are awesome guns in the field but that 16" barrel is a real treat to carry around and swing to make fast shots. I'd have the short barrel too if it came in left hand.

I have heard of southpaws picking up a RH 452 American 16", and a LH 452 American 22", and having the barrels swapped then selling the RH with the 22" barrel as unfired. I believe there is a smith in southern Alberta (Lethbridge comes to mind) who did this for them.

Thanks,
Cal.

My favorite bush 22s are my cz 452 style with a nikon 2-7 and my 9 1/4" barreled 1022 with a 1.5-4.5 scope chief on it. The ruger is more accurate if you can keep it steady, the style is easier to shoot overall

The 1/2 in 50 yd challenge has a few good hits. The Rem 541,
Savage heavy barrel, and the CZ varmint all made the grade. No 10-22 yet or other CZ mod. Any one try with a 77/22? Looking for a sporter that qualifies -your ideas. Aj

My 77/22 always makes the gopher hunts. Uses the same 25 round mags that I use in my 10/22's, have 5 now, with a speedloader I can carry 125 rounds at my disposal. It is no longer a lightweight sporter, but it goes anyway. Wickedly accurate with remmy subs. Only problem is I have trouble keeping it out of my older son's hands.
