accurate powder measure you use?

Hi all,

What reliable powder measure do you use that is accurate to the tenth of grain?

I am not looking for a e.g. $1000 piece of equipment that talks to me and can orbit space, it just measures accurately and a fair price.

For hunting loads I use a Lee measure, if your constant in your manipulation and keep the reservoir level fairly constant it is more than accurate enough. If I'm doing load and group comparisons I will take the time to set measure very fractionally light into the scale pan and finish with a trickler. The Lee measure does give good results if used as a above (hunting loads) 1000 rounds loaded weight taken every 10 and the variance analyzed being .001%. I think most powder measure would be similar if your consistant in your routine.
I chose the Lee because It was only $28.00 and available locally years ago, hope this helps, art.h

If you aren't looking to spend a lot of money get a beam type scale. If you want something nice get an RCBS 1500 Chargemaster Combo for a very good price from the U.S. by going to the Natchez website. They are around $279.00 right now which is about $200.00 cheaper than you can buy it in Canada. I think the dollar is around par right now and get it sent USPS so you don't get nailed with brokerage fees.

Good for you. I bought one up here a year or so back so I got hosed on the price. I went from using a beam scale to the Combo and would never go back. If you don't like it (which I highly doubt) you won't have any trouble selling it.
 
I almost bought 2 at that price........

I was just contemplating a Lyman DPS vs a RCBS Chargemaser combo the other day, I was about 5 seconds from shelling out $500 if the wife hadn't stayed in the car :eek:

Now I'm kinda glad she came in to get me.......

Bingo, its an investment $200 to $ 600 is not bad look for deals or sale's.
 
I just bought a rcbs powder measure yesterday for $100 at lebarons. It seems to be very accurate when I tested it with my 505 scales. It takes me 1/4 the time to load with my lee loader now instead of using a scale.

FYI, in the early ninetys I loaded .223 match ammo for an AR 15 match rifle I had assembled on a Dillon 1050 using the Dillon measure. The load used H4895 stick powder and 52gr Sierra hp match bullets. Never tested the consistency of the measure, but the rifle would shoot into 1/2" at 100 yds, so I didn't really care.

The rifle was a stock Colt lower, SGW flat top upper, 24" barrel, alloy tubular forearm and Harris bipod.

I started with a Lee Perfect Powder measure and a beam scale. With fine powders like H335 the Lee measure leaked. I then bought an RCBS measure which works great with H335 but not at all with large grain powder. With re22 etc it isn't workable at all. I use a lee scope and an electronic scale and trickle up to my load weight.

Just to update, I got the Chargemaster combo in the mail today..... They 'only' dinged me $44.89 for shipping and an additional $8.50 for 'handling'.

With the favorable exchange rate Still wound up cheaper than anywhere in Canuckistan.....

I'm using a Redding 3BR "Powder Measure" with two different sized micrometers (one for rifle, and a smaller capacity one for throwing pistol loads). I really like it and find it throws consistent powder charges. It works well with stick powders too - and doesn't get jammed with powder. It easily shears through the sticks with its sharp mechanism.

I also have the RCBS Uniflow - which works well too and costs less.

I always use these in combination with a set of calibration weights and calibrate the scale to the powder charge I'm using.

As for scale, I use the RCBS 5-0-5

Be careful with electronic powder scales, they can drift due to many outside influences.

[EDITOR's NOTE: In the months since we tested the RCBS ChargeMaster, there have been more than a few reports of machines that had unstable zeros, or threw a charge that was, in fact, higher than the load weight reported, by as much as 0.4 grains. Accordingly, we recommend you check your ChargeMaster against a beam scale or lab scale of known accuracy. If you see a problem, particularly with overcharges, we recommend you return the unit to RCBS for replacement.]

My Frankford Arsenal Electronic Powder Scale drifts all over the place so I reverted back to my old RCBS Balance Beam scales.
