ALRIGHTY.

So I was just informed from a trusted source that the spring in an M14; if its straight; increases accuracy (less play when it picks up a round from the mag or something...like...puts it in more close to the same way rather than all wayward cuz of the looser tolerances...)

ANYWAY. I checked it. Mine has it. Yay.

but it got me thinking.... My SKS has a curvey one....

Does anyone know if doing such a procedure on an SKS would make it more accurate? I.E. picking up rounds better or some crap?

Also what kind of internal upgrade do you guys suggest to make it abit more accurate.

Every now and again I go nuts over trying to accurize my sks to my AR's standards (its in 7.62 x 39) XD

Any insight is greatly appreciated!

(P.S. SO HELP ME GOD IF ANYONE MENTIONS USING HANDLOADS AGAIN XD)

the spring in an M14
There is more than one spring in an M14. Perhaps you are thinking of the oprod spring that the SKS doesn't have.

There must be something you could do with the bayonet attachment as a barrel stiffener (Like a Mini 14) or harmonic adjuster (Like a Mini 14 target).
A spare bayo, a dremel and a steel rod, somebody perhaps has done this.

anyone ever compare their hits with the bayo out inside of folded in? my buddy has a mosin and swears the thing is more accurate when the bayo is out. makes no difference to me as i cant hit #### with it anyone :D

If you want to accurize the SKS, do any or all of the following:

- improve the trigger;
- improve the sights;
- restock it; and
- use handloads in it.

Anything else would have dubious value.

The best way to accurize the SKS is to sell it and buy a Vz58.

Did you mean Mini-Thirty?

... unfortunately the sks's main drawback is the ammo we all blast through it.

But it's not intended to shoot accurately past 150 to 200 metres...

If you want the BEST accuracy out of the gun with surplus ammo then you should do the following:
-trigger job
-remove cleaning rod
-remove bayonet
-get some Devcon or JB weld and bed the barrel around the recevier, (especially around the rear) and around the front ferrule.

The idea is you want to remove any play between receiver/barrel and the stock, and by doing so (along with removing the bayo and rod) you increase the repeatability of shots. This is because you would have effectively cut down on variations in harmonics among shots.

Again... some people will buy a Honda Civic and dump in $10,000 in go-fast extras.... why not take the $10,000, along with the original purchase amount and put it all towards something better from the get-go.

The mosin is designed to be shot with the bayo out. SKSs are more accurate if you lose the bayo.

you can also take the bayonet lug off , I did this to mine and just my opinion it feels much better! I am still going to try handloads , as I think that the surp ammo is mostly the problem , I went nuts trying to sight in my scope with that stuff!! Almost threw my sks in the bin haha!

Just remember, when you "accurize an SKS" :)rolleyes::rolleyes:), you take a $169.00 gun, add $400.00 worth of aftermarket accessories and you still have a $169.00 gun!!!

Well some people jsut need to shoot their's more to get accuracy. You need to know your gun and get used to it. Then a trigger job for feel and consistancy, then bed the stock. I thought my SKS was not overly accurate and then I put a scope on it and the accuracy was far better, it looks like I am not an iron sight shooter.

I "accurized" my two Russian refurbs by firing plenty of ammo through them. You just need to learn how to shoot them, and that takes practice. I can achieve consistent 2 to 3 inch 5-round groups at 100 metres using the irons and surplus ammo.

I have been thinking of making up an adapter to mount an M-7 bayonet below and parallel to the barrel a - la the SMLE #1 MKIII*. should not be too hard. Sometimes bubba whispers in my ears. :p

Edit: dried out and ill fitting stocks are not really conducive to accuracy, I find. * the 'aftermarket stocks' available for the SKS are garbage (they dispense with the 'unnecessary' recoil lug :jerkit:). - I don't know about the Bell & Carlson but they are not made anymore as far as I know.
