The January Issue of a Czech Arms Magazine published an article on the Canadian modification of the 858 Tactical. The author also quotes CZ about preparation of accesories: plastic upper and lower handguard with Weaver Rails, pistol grip and a VFG. They also mentioned a red-dot optics made for 858.
Based on the knowledge of the CZ I recommend:
1) Dont hold your breath
2) Save the excitement when you see the end product
I think the author made a mistake stating the Canadian law permits ONLY the long-barrel version. Can anybody clear this in plain human English, maybe even with the name or number of the Act?
Stay safe and keep your guns

Normal lenght CZ-58's are in Canada.

The 858 is the aborted version that has the ridiculously long barrel so it is non restricted.

You still have access to metal rails for the CZ-58's and extra mags (hi-caps) [shipping to US APO...]

I may play with some of the CZ's here.

- AND why is it that only in Canada do they say Vz-58 - everywhere else seems to say CZ-58...

So if you want to buy the restricted, do you have to ask for special permit or something? Can you shoot the non-restricted anywhere, not just on a range or use it for hunting? The high-cap mags are available all the time. It would be the low-aps that would be hard to get. Rails are a little pain in ... but still doable. I didnt have time to check the postage or courier service fees.

the biggest let -down for this rifle is the lack of accessory rail/ optics rail. I can live with the wierd safety, and the tilting of the mag to insert it, but who ever brings in an optics rail will sell them quick, as long as they are not overpriced.

Bugaboo_CZ,

The "restricted" version is advertised as the VZ-58S. This is, as I understand it, a CZ-58 which is semi-auto only. "Restricted" is the second level of firearms ownership in Canada and you must have a "restricted" license to own them. A restricted firearm may only be shot in an approved range, and requires an "authorization to transport" (ATT) if you want to take it out of it's place of storage, ie) your home.

The "non-restricted" rifle is sold as the CZ-858 and has a barrel that is some three inches longer than the CZ-58. To me, the extra length is hardly noticable - it's about the length of the front sight assembly. "Non-restricted" is the first level of firearms ownership in Canada, and although you must still have a license, the rifle may be discharged anywhere that it is legal to do so, and you do not require an ATT to transport it.

The high cap magazines may be used, but must be permanently altered to 5 round capacity. This is usually accomplished by riveting the magazine so that the follower is stopped at 5 rounds. This is done particularly neatly in the CZ mags where the rivet is put through the "rib" along the spine of the mag.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for the info, spi. I am just pissed the guys dont even try to find the correct info before publishing.
I hope you can get the acessories, that is the primary reason I posted this.

VanIsle and AlbinoRhino are clearly new CGN members. That, or they haven't been paying attention.

To bring you up to speed with the ongoing conversation, KevinB is a private military contractor in Afghanistan. Magazine capacity laws do not apply. It is difficult to wrap your head around, I know.

To think that there are still places in the world where the Canadian Lieberals have not imposed their 5-round magazine law in exchange for foreign aid. It simply boggles the mind.....
