Ackley Improved

That's true OB, but it has come to mean any case improved with a 40 degree shoulder that you can still use regular ammo in. There are AI's in calibers that weren't invented when PO left the stage, the 260 AI for example. A properly chambered and handloaded 270 AI will not "smoke at both ends" unless something is wrong somewhere. - dan

AI's are OK but there's no magic in them..I've done them in 223AI, 7-08AI and 280AI..all pushed the bullet clear thru the bore just like the parent cases did...albeit, a bit faster;)....the case stretching thing may have merit for some, I just wish I could shoot any cartridge enough to where case stretching became a problem.....I'd love to shoot out a half dozen .22 centerfire barrels too.......they make new tubes every day....

First custom I had built about 6 years ago was a 7-08AI and I just rebarelled my 7-08 Titanium to 7-08AI with a new PacNor tube so I guess I think they're OK.....they can give feeding problems in some actions though...the 223AI in a 700 gave me fits....sold it cheap and swore off the little bugger...got a 22-250 instead....they feed...

I have a factory Ruger 77 in 7.62x39 which I always thought would be great in an AI version. Despite a few posts, the calibre does not appear to be Ackleyized. I assume this is because of all the steel cased surplus ammo and SKS type autoloaders around. For a bolt action using factory brass I can't see a problem. The stock 7.62x39 seems to have the droopy shoulders that like the 303 British thatshould be improved by an Ackley version (Epps). Does anyone know of an Ackley 7.62x39 ? Thanks.

.22-250ai

I have one on Barnard action, with a 26" pac-nor 1-14twist super match palma bbl.....Done by ATRS..... I am getting 4050 fps with 55gr noslers, accuracy well, at 400m i can chuck ten out, and out a twoonie over top of all ten.....

I have also shot it out PAST 1000 yrds..... actually 1123 yards...... with good accuracy..... This was at summerland last year, witnessed by some CGN'ers but for this far, i should be with a high BC VLD though...

Shoots fast and flat. Exactly what i was looking for.

I am building a 6.5, just waiting for the barrel and am struggling to choose between the 6.5x55 and its AI version. Not to hi-jack the revived post or anything, but does anyone have experience with both?

Yes Curt, I have both. 2 - 6.5x55 without modifications [a M700 Remington "Classic" and a Swedish mauser] My 6.5x55 AI is on a Remington 721 Action with a Lothar-Walther barrel (sporter contour) in a 1-8" twist. The 6.5x55AI is much better to load for because I never have to full-length resize. The AI case does not get tighter and tighter to chamber each time it is fired and neck sized. Don't have to trim nearly as often either. You can approach 6.5-284 velocities without using quite as much powder. Only issue is feeding in some rifles [I have had NO problems here] You can expect close to 3000 FPS with 139-142 grain pills and 3200 with 120-125's. Any questions, just ask. Regards, Eagleye.

The closest wildcat would be a 30PPC or a bit bigger, 30BR.

Make a very nice rd.

Check out RCBS and CH for the custom calibers selection.

Forget Custom Dies....Redding has most (if not all) of the more common AI cartridges including 260 AI and their quality is top notch. You will pay a goodly amount for a Match set but, IMO, it is well worth every penny spent.
