Ive recently been taking a hard look at optics and Im thinking that whatever I may have saved on my rifle parts (AR15) ...will be negated by the cost of "real" optics.

My question is simple: Is it worth the money?

With relation to availability and cost (stil $$$) would an ELCAN be better?

In both cases it would be to 100-300 yard service style shooting.

They are totally different scopes. You have to figure want to use it for. Try them both out if someone at your range has them. Then ask yourself how much money you are willing to part with.

I managed to try an ELCAN C79 today at the range and it was a clear and great field of view at 100yards. There were ACOGS as well.

My primary need would be for Service Rifle between 100-300yards. A 3x optics seems to be the optimum and there are always trade offs.

Im looking to try an ACOG and see which is better. Price and availability will determine my eventual choice.

For service rifle shoots the Elcan is the clear choice, if you want a more allround optic the ACOG wins, I have had many of both and will stick with the Elcan for a dedicated Service Conditions rig.

Sparrow's right, Using the Elcan frequently, I prefer the ACOG..Go Trijicon, even for the extra $$ it's going to cost you...

I've seen ELCANs sell for between $ 600 and $ 800 depending on condition. Brand new, they will run you about $ 1000 upwards.

Are they worth it ? They sure kick my ass all over the Matches 1 - 12.
