Sorry if this has been covered recently. Who does this and what’s involved? Can I get parts and do it? I seem to remember years ago a guy had to send in the upper for the swap.

It’s basically an AR barrel with .750 gas journal and some extra machining, not hard to do but you’ll give up your gas system obviously to equip the new barrel.

Even if you got a new barrel, you'll need to take it to a verifier to get its classification changed.

I did this with my USC/UMP conversion. Had a local verifier send in the report (Most gun shops or gunsmiths SHOULD have a verifier) Took about a month or so.

ETA

If you do it at a place like Herron Arms or Dlask, they'll likely do the verifier report for you (if you send the gun in).

You can look for a barrel assembly with a barrel long enough to qualify for NR (import if required) then you can do the barrel replacement yourself then call the CFP to report the barrel length change - they can verify over the phone for simple scenarios like this. A perfunctory search shows a 18.5 barrel in 450 bushmaster on gunbroker right now.

The benefit is that you still have the shorter barrel available and can _temporarily_ swap it in if you want to play at the range.

Dlask has the ability to do all kinds of stuff, but little willingness. Can't blame them for focusing on volume over one offs tho.

I doubt dlask would even have the time or capacity to do this.

Dlask's been REALLY good at doing weird one-off projects to me over the years, but sometimes you have to wait for a while. They've had a couple of my rifles since mid-May... they're pretty busy with Bren2 stuff right now from what I understand.
