Let's say I'd like to get myself a 358 norma. What size action do I put it on? Will a 30/06 size work (have to open the bolt face I guess) or do I need a 7mm RM, 338 win etc. It's a standard (30/06) size cartridge so if I don't need a huge magnum action I'd prefer ther. If I have to use a huge action I might as well get a 358 STA but thats to close to my 375 H&H and I'm not really looking for that. I guess I could also look into a 350 rem in a short action but I kind of like the in between of the 358 norma. Just looking for some ideas. Bottom line is I want a .35 cal.

Thanks

Any standard magnum action will work well... a used .264, 7mm Rem, .300 Win, .338 Win...

it's an easier conversion from an existing magnum... no feeding or bolt alterations needed...

That being said, it will be a more costly project than building a .338 Win. to get basically the same performance...

The FN Browning safari was made in .358NM as well as others.I have the .308NM it's a commercial 98 action................Harold

When I faced the same question,I had a couple of considerations.Since I had a 358Norma long neck being built,I wanted a slightly longer box then the standard 3.340.I also wanted a deep box, since if you are using the 358,the reason might be bears. The deeper box allows you to have four down instead of three. This lets out the M-700. The p/f M-70 ,Classic M-70 and Sako are about perfect. I used a much cheaper Enfield and had the box lengthened.

The 358Norma shots 250s at the same speed as 338WM does 225s.

My 358 Norma is built on a standard Brno 98 action. It works fine, but the mag box is a bit short, can't seat my bullets out as far as I'd like to. One day I'll fix that.

Mine is built on a 98 as well. Any standard length action will work, mag box may have to be modified, bolt face will (if an 06 size) need to be opened up, follower and feed lips may have to be modified. The 358 is a good caliber, I prefer it over the 338, although there really isn't a huge difference. Kills moose like the hammer of Thor though. - dan

358 nm

I built one for a friend of mine a few years ago and I just used a standard 98 mauser action, and reworked the magazine and loading ramp so It would accept loads of the proper length, worked just great. Actually the first short magnums were the .300 &.358 NORMA MAGNUMS.
