Hey guys. I was out shooting my remmington 12ga pump the other day and a fellow shooter gave me some of his reloads. However, the action would not lock, so obviously it would not fire. He said that this could be from his primer not being seated deep enough. Has this happened to any of you, and if so, is it an inherent problem with pumps? I was going to reload myself, but if this would cause troubles, well maybe I won't. Either that or get me an o/u. He was shooting a semi.

His reloading is almost certainly at fault.
I very much doubt it's primer seating though, that sounds like he's a newbie reloader. Shotgun primers (battery cups) seat very easily.
More likely he's not sizing the base, or, is not crimping properly causing deformed hulls.

Definitely bad reloads. I'm pretty particular about my reloads but I usually don't let other people shoot them. If your gun works with factory ammo but doesn't work with someone else's reloads it's pretty clear where the problem lies.

Ditto on the bad reloads; was it jamming on the forward plastic part of the shell, or where the brass begins? Either way, he's not resizing them properly.

It was just that little bit at the end of the cycle. I probably only needed to close it another few thou of an inch and it would have locked. So from what you guys have said, it was probably the brass that was not sized all of the way. Probably not unlike my rifle loads where my chamber is just a bit tight where is was not reamed out quite enough and it just takes that extra bit to close the bolt.

Thanks

not all presses resize the brass, like the mec jr. It just reloads. Also were they quality hulls or cheap ones with the tin instead of brass?

Sorry the MEC jr. does resize the brass, It happens at the deprime stage if the resize ring hasn't been removed or properly adjusted!

Reloads..

Unless you REALLY know the guy who's lending you reloads to try NEVER borrow any ammunition someone else reloaded. If he made a mistake, you could pay the price with personal unjury or a burst barrel, action or gunstock.

This is important for all types of ammo..shotshell, pistol/revolver loads.

If I screw up, I'll pay the price for my mistake. If someone else screws up I'm not certain I'll be able to get HIM/HER to pay the price it cost me..!

It does. However I generally don't resize my reloads and don't have functioning problems even among different guns. My bet is that it was a bad crimp.

Sounds like the press may not be setup properly to do a full stroke on resizing the brass. Check brass base or measure dia. you may see the problem?????
