Hey guys.

So I am using 3" magnum #4 shells for turkey. First time using the longer shells. Wow, they pack a whallop!

When I fire them through my Mossberg 500 12 guage, the recoil is so forceful that it cycles the action open, moving the next shell up from the magazine and into position, but sometimes loose, so that it falls out or otherwise fumbles around.

Is something loose in the action, that it isn't staying locked up when this happens? Advice welcomed.

Please post or PM me.

As said above, the lug should remain in place unless you pull on the pump. Make sure the pump grip hasn't worked loose and goes forward as far as it should, and that the trigger assembly is as it should be, engaging and releasing all the right catches.

Its quite normal for the recoil to open the action on a Winchester, they used to work it into their advertisements. Seems like they are again.

MORGAN, UTAH — In a year of many milestones in the legendary history of Winchester firearms, Winchester Repeating Arms is excited to announce the return of the new Speed Pump® shotgun to the company’s product line for 2008.

The Winchester Speed Pump is FAST!

The Speed Pump’s rotary bolt design features four massive lugs that allows inertia to start the forearm and slide mechanism rearward as the stock recoils against the shoulder, giving a head start on the next shot. Dual steel action bars eliminate twisting, binding and wasted time and energy when cycling the action.

Malfunctioning because of it is probably a Mossberg specific thing.;)

when it does it, let your arm come completely back before returning forward... get it right, and you essentially have a speedpump.

my friends 500 did the same thing... at first he would short pump it, then he used it to his advantage, and hes nearly as fast as a semi

now, I miscounted my rounds on the rifle and I triple shot a rifle target to screw up my count, but I still came in ok on the stage. This is a Winchester model 120. Winchester guns shoot fast.

I like the sounds of this speedpump action so I'm gonna try a looser grip on the pump this weekend.

The way I shoot my 870 is "stretching" it.
Drive the stock into your shoulder, and push the pump forward while shooting.
If you don't want the action opening on it's own, I'm sure that will solve it. It helps with recoil management for the next shot.

The true speed pumps were the old m37 ithica .if you held the trigger in it would slam fire as you ran the action closed .an old timer I hunted with years ago could shoot his as fast as any remington 1100 I am sure.
