I noticed that all Savage SA, R700 SA, bighorn origin and probably other R700 clones, use the same size and pitch of action screws.
Anyone know the exact size and grade used?

Long story short, I'd like to have a few extra handy in different lenghts.
An online fastener shop link would be great if ever!

Thanks!
Will look into good quality SS ones online.
Yeah I have trimmed them in the past, if they are cheap I'll simply have a miniature tackle box with a few of each lenght.
I help friends with barrel installs on Savage systems, and Savage rifles always get here with stripped action screw heads.

1/4"x28 is standard National Fine thread - will find in most hardware places. Look at the bolt head - add 2 to the number of rays that you see. A bolt with three rays is a Grade 5 bolt - softer, but quite adequate. Tougher will be Grade 8. Dies and taps easily available as well. Also Cap Screws, which I think are always Grade 8 (?). I have "home made" replacement action screw for Rem 788 by filing and spinning in a drill press to re-shape a Grade 5 hex bolt head into sort of a domed shape, then cut a slot for flat blade screw driver with hack saw. Was "desperate" - but it worked fine.

Your friends are stripping hex head screws? Admittedly, you can strip anything if you try hard enough; but hex tends to lend itself to being tightened/torqued without many issues.

Having worked in an industry that used these a great deal, I disagree. Sadly, stripping them is all too easy for the hamfisted. - dan

Especially the Savage brand ones, are very soft, this combined with an ill fitting allen is a recipe for disaster.
The type on action screws seen with premium chassis such as MDT or Manners, never seen an issue...

All screws are not created equal. Some hardware stores might sell socket head cap screws that meet the thread spec, but they are just a normal grade screw.

There was a company called UNBRAKO that made a better grade screw that we used in the plant for specialty situations, but I think they no longer go by that name. I would get those if you want nice screws. You will not find anything better.

I did a quick Google search and found hits, so you can still get them if you look. Just specify UNBRAKO to any knowledgeable fastener dealer like Fastenal and they will know what you're asking for.

You will find that a Torx driver fits the screws much better than the hex key. It's a T-25 or T-30. Once you try it you will never use your hex key again.

Fair enough, if you try and apply "Polak torque" to most fasteners they'll wilt under the strain. Then the AvE adage applies, loosen a half turn...

When it comes to action screws, though, so many people are fussy about torque values; which makes it seem a tad odd that this is such a regular occurrence for the OP.
