Action shooting comps to the border in the USA along SW Ontario?

Hey all,

Just trying to get a sense of the matches you people attend close to the border with Ontario in the USA weather it be USPSA, 3 gun or practical rifle or shotgun. I am trying to find out what is out there. I try searching on practisescore.com but it's hard as you have to know the word to search and you can't break it down by area so if you search 3gun vs 3-gun you get different results.

One thing I noticed which seams not too far from Niagara Falls is a Ontario, NY club (Ontario Rod & Gun Club) hosts practical rifle and 3gun often. Has anybody been there? How are they? Any other matches I should be aware of? I am more into 3gun or shotgun or rifle vs pistol only.

I am trying to pre-plan as much as possible next year. It appears matches happen on a weekly basis down there so I wanna try to do a few matches a year. Also should I sign up for 3gun nation? Is it worth the fee?

NY seems to have become problematic. I was recently advised by USBP to avoid trying to enter NY with firearms.

Michigan is okay though... Google Livingston 3-gun or Wayne County raccoons hunters uspsa.

Thanks for posting some info. I will check into those. I have been checking Enos for next year but it seems to be only sponsored matches and down south in Texas, New Mexico and Florida for now, I will keep checking though. I was just checking here to see if there was a club that had matches bi weekly or monthly close to the boarder that I could look into.

Good thing to know about New York. Another thing I have been checking mag limits and it appears that the max mag limit in New York is 7 and Michigan has no limits. Any reason why New York is best avoided? They don't like guns or don't want guns coming over the boarder to their state? What about Pennsylvania? Gun friendly for Canadians?
 
Guy I know was told by CBP that he could bring his pistol in his car into and through New York but he was not allowed to stop. No coffee, no pissing.

I cross the ditch several times a month for shootings events. USCBP is not problematic YOU the individual is the root issue because you can't or don't know the rules. 99% of the problem is that the person does not have an invite the the comp organizers addressed to them. No invite no entry simple.

You can possess ten round mags in NY. As for MI it not an issue as you can't carry there anyways. Any comp you're involved in will be to the specific shoot regs.

I have found a few web sites now mostly USPSA but it's a start as some of the sam ranges host multi-gun matches monthly too. I am just going through them slowly and I also gotta wait for their 2017 calendar. I just needed a place to start as I was going in circles but now I seem to be finding my way ok. Thanks

Yeah I am not going to carry, only to compete. I'll have another look at the page I was looking at. Thanks for the info.

I'm just passing on what I was told during a recent conversation with ONE USBP officer at Niagara Falls.
His "advice" was to stay out of NY as despite the having F6NIA and match invite you're still in violation of NY state law and contrary to what many believe... Federal rules do not trump state law.
I used to go into NY regularly to shoot, but haven't been for a few years... The last trip I was "this close" to being turned around and sent home... The only reason they gave for letting me through was that I had a badge and was going to a match at "police" range.
Even at that CBP only said "You have a badge? You'll PROBABLY " be okay.... Lol.

Could you provide some hard data that proves your statement about the 99% of the problems along the border while trying to shoot in the States is please?

No that was a comment in general an in no way intende towards him. It is meant to be personal observation of what I've seen over the years. I've been crossing the ditch with firearms for close to forty years. It's not my first rodeo.
 
I have personal experience. Myself and two other often US travellers to the US for matches were held up for a few hours and ultimately turned around and sent home at the Buffalo border. I will NEVER go over there again with my firearms. We were headed to a 3 gun match, had every piece of info needed including a match invite. A state trooper called in specially to deal with us eventually photocopied our drivers licenses, wrote down our cell numbers, explained how gracious they were being for not confiscating everything in my truck which would have been - 3 AR's, 3 shotguns and 5 pistols and not of the low end variety - and turned us around. It was not much fun and I really would like to go through that again.

Since then a dozen people have come up and told me they went to this match or that match in Buffalo or surrounding area and never had an issue. All I can say is this actually happened to me, not hearsay.
 
Why did the stop you from crossing and feel like they were doing you a favor by not taking your firearms? This is what is scary. I have read depending if the border guy got laid or not decides if you get into the USA or not.

I think your story has been passed around the CBP community. You're probably mentioned in an internal bulletin... LOL
The officer I spoke with in Niagara Falls told me a story about how a group of Canadians had been sent home after the NYSP were called to the border and "did them a favour" by sending them home without taking their guns...

'Had no idea at the time he was talking about YOU...LoL
