[Wrong Way]

I only want this gun for long hiking hunting trips not just shooting so the recoil wont be a problem (i already shoot a few big guns)

300 RUM.....5.5 lbs.....LOL...you have NO idea. Make sure your scope has LOTS of eye relief.....like maybe a scout?

I have a 300 RUM in a 700 LSS, and I thank the good lord for every ounce everythime I pull the trigger.

I used to have a Remmy Custom Shop mountain rifle, with the kevlar stock in .300 WinMag. It was not unpleasant to shoot, and I could pound-off 10-or-15 from the bench before I'd get tired of it (it would take hours to get off 20 rounds because the barrel would get really hot after just a couple of rounds).

granted it weighed 6.5 lbs, tossed the 180s 300 fps slower, and did it with a 24" barrel.
I think a 5.5lb .300 RUM with a well designed stock, a really good recoil pad and a 20" barrel (which would leave LOTS of powder gas to work a muzzle brake) would be tolerable.

One could also save some weight by going to single shot action.

I had a chance to try out a 6 1/4 lb .416 Rigby. With 400 grain bullets the recoil was tolerable so a 5.5 lb .300 should be survivable. The Rigby is relatively low pressure so the "rocket" effect when the bullet leaves the bore is less pronounced.
