Been a direct impingement AR guy fer about 35 years and skeptical about piston AR's - SO -

I had to find out for myself because of all the internet bulsh!t about AR pistons.

Adams kits are the best out there for a conversion from a DI if you dont want to spend the moolah for a PWS.

After mega shoot tests I found that YES - pistons are less accurate than DI, BUT - that was expected because a barrel without a lot of reciprocating metal on top will whip less.

HOWEVER - the difference was usually same group size - but frequent non shooter induced fliers - ( Up to 1 " away from center) at 100 yds.

Bottom line - It was put on a CQB gun - 12.5 " barrel - so it dont matter !
Shorties are stiff and dont whip much -

For a full length barrel - yes - loss of accuracy is magnified.

For a 3 gun match or house clearing gun rapid fire gun the cool clean chamber is very well worth it ! :D

Solves short stroking on shorties also :)

I'm keepin it ! It still hits the 200 yd gong every time !

Carrier Tilt

Shoot a video torture test review in sandy cond. and address carrier tilt issues when it becomes evident.
I will let the manufacturers torture their guns - they can afford it LOL !

Shortie DI AR's tend to need lots of sand attracting lube on the carriers to function well, piston AR's need very little lube - less sand.

According to Adams Arms and user tests on U.S. AR 15 forums, tilt has been eliminated by the new included bolt carrier, but I will be keeping an eye on this.

There was one test that showed uneven wear on the carrier sides due to the piston rod not striking the bolt carrier in the center. This was deemed to be an out of spec receiver barrel fit.

My rifle is a Stag so I dont expect a similar situation, but I will be watching this also.

So far I think the Adams is the best choice for an affordable piston conversion. Tests seem to show that it is the most accurate of the conversion kits.

The only drawback I can think of is perhaps the lack of ability to go back to gas impingment due to the bushing in the receiver gas tube hole. - to drive it back out from the front may be difficult if not impossible due to the size of the hole at the front not allowing a punch big enough in diameter to do the job.(BUT-new upper receivers are cheap) -

What about a dedicated Adams piston upper? This should eliminate any conversion issues I guess. The only question who is going to bring them in?

Adams Piston Kit

Got mine from Fabrice - It was on the site, and he told me he had more stuff coming in (an Adams piston free float forend)

Call Adams Arms and confirm Kanadian distributor - (they wont ship to Kanada unless its a distributor)

What I like about the Adams conversion is how slick the bolt carrier is with a minimum amount of GREASE. Feels like greased ball bearings.

The 12.5" AR is much FASTER in cycling, ejects brass farther and faster at about 2 o'clock. .

The recoil pulse is definately faster and snappier - but less.

Less muzzle rise and less rearward movement.

Heres an accuracy test on an Ares system -

I wonder if we'll see a lot of Norc M4s now with piston systems :D

I can see the piston systems for the shorties, but I'm still a fan of DI for the regular carbines and especially for target rifles.

Carrier tilt

After about a thousand rounds there is a perfectly centered wear mark on the finish of the bolt from the piston rod.

Absolutely no signs of any carrier tilt wear in the finish at the buffer tube or bottom rear of the bolt.

I believe carrier tilt will be a non issue forever with the Adams Arms bolt. :D
