Adams&bennett rifle barrels? good or bad or great?

Why Not, I am always confused as to why anyone that is building a custom rifle with a custom chamber, hasn't done enough homework to find out such things as performance vs efficiency vs barrel life. There are certain cartridge designs that are more efficient and moderate pressures than others. To use a case that has more capacity than is useful causes many other problems related to pressures, powders and accuracy. I will concede case designs can and do have a lot to do with performance. I have been reading, but have no experience with the super short designs and their tendency to foul quickly from the powders needed to make them perform. Not a really big problem as long a a rigid cleaning program is used but they also generate esceedingly hot gasses at the throat area that gives shorter accuracy life.

It is usually quite difficult to get a cartridge loaded with reduced charges to be accurate. There are always exceptions, but it's a good rule of thumb.

Well What I'm doing is not building a custom rifle I'm asking questions from What I think to be a good source Of info ( I would call this homework) I don't see any point in getting carried away about building a rifle until I have an understanding of what this process entails so I think asking questions of people who have done custom guns including using the actually gun I have to work with is just the smart thing to do

You stated that there are certain cartridges that are more efficent at moderate pressures. so which cartridges are they? this is the stuff that I would like know from people who have actually owned and shot these calibres I know what I like and have success with in standard rifles that i own have owned or have shot.

What I want to do is not head in the wrong direction because I don't know any better until I asked about 6mm mark VII I had no idea that used to it's full potential it would only last 800 rnds give or take so now I know cause I asked

SOme people have built tons of guns but they still had build a first which means they had to learn how

Clay, your original post mentioned building a 25-303 or 6mm-303 on a P14 action. Either one of these would make a decent outfit, as would the 6.5-303.

If you had the chambering done in the standard 303 case configuration, rather than the improved, you would have essentially no other work to do other than have the barrel installed. The rails, feed ramp, bolt face, etc. should all work as is, with no alterations at all. If there needed to be some, it would be minimal. Epps probably still has those reamers.

If you want to try a 25-303 Imp, I know for sure that Bevan King has that reamer, because he built one for me. :D It was very accurate, and case life was excellent!

25-303, excellent cartridge and performance as well as useing moderate pressures. Should duplicate or slightly better 257 Roberts performance and on a relatively cheap and easy to procure action.

By the way clayberg, I wasn't knocking your inquisitiveness, I actually applaud it and think more people should do the same. I just felt you were being led down the wrong path by some well meaning members of this board.

You realise that the less extreme the case, the less work and expense there is to get the rifle to perform well. It is also a major chore to keep up the brass supply if you're going to shoot a lot. I like the direction you're headed with the cartridge conversions and maybe someone here on the board from Australia can pitch in here. The Australians have made up many custom cartridges on the 303 Brit case. Neccessitated by an abundance of rifles and crtridge cases available and some draconian laws prohibiting the use of the 303Brit in some provinces.

Sorry I sold this one it was a shooter original .257 Epps Improved made by Epps, lucky Gunnutz member has this one very pleased as well.
You just fired .257 Roberts to make casings,

THat's fair Enough bearhunter and Being led astray by misinformation is why I want to hear from guys who actually own and shoot guns of this sort. With all my pondering here I Don't want to suggest that I have magnumitis I happen to think that My 06 works just fine But I also don't want to build something that replicates what I already own...
