First i need to thank blacksmithden for the sticky up top on how to get down to business. You made this process a whole heck of a lot easier bud!

i started to make my first ingots from wheel weights today, and i was amazed at how easy it really is! starting out i laid the weights out on a sheet of plywood in the yard at work and let them sun bake while i picked out the valve stems and obvious Fe and Zn weights.

when i was satisfied i was ready i fired up the propane burner with a 5 gallon metal pail on it and filled it 1/3 full with weights. while it was heating i went inside to suit up in heavy cotton coveralls, welders boots and gloves, a p100 lead abatement respirator and faceshield. by the time i got back outside my lead was already melting!

after about 10 min and a few stirs it was quickly turning from slush into molten lead. at this point i skimmed off the clips and any Zn weights i had missed, and then dropped in a pea sized ammount of wax to flux, stirred, scraped, and skimmed off the dross. i know some people dont flux before the ingot stage but i couldn't see the harm in putting very clean ingots into the lee pot to be fluxed again, and i wanted to ensure the tin content didn't oxidize much while it was cooking. please inform me if im wrong to assume this.

Knowing my weights were VERY dry i left an inch or so of molten lead in the bottom to add more WW to, so as to speed up the process. all in all i made several hundred 1 pound ingots in muffin molds in about 5 hours using the direction provided by blacksmithdens' sticky. very nice!

And as an added bonus, i stopped by to check the mail on my way home to find my RCBS lubamatic, mold handles, sizing die, and gas checks had arrived! Now im just waiting for my mold from NOE to arrive and im ready to go!

VERY EXCITED! i have enough lead and supplies on hand to make about 12 000 265 grain gas checked .432 bullets for my 444, and the lead stash just keeps on growing! i am no longer missing the 30-30 i had to part with to afford the casting gear AT ALL! i'd much rather have one powerfull rifle with nearly unlimited ammunition than 2 rifles shooting expensive factory made, hard to come by boolits anyday! not to say i only have one rifle, but you see what im getting at. :D

Following your progress with interest.
Did my first 300lb melt the same as you, now have another 300 to do.
Have to first open the revolver throats to match bore before ordering a custom mold, the waiting is hard.
Thanks Blacksmithden.

I too am going to start casting.. just bought my first batch of range lead and am going to make ingots next weekend.. the price is hard to beat... I will be getting about 2000, 200 grain .40 cal bullets per 56 lbs and am looking to save a bunch of cash this way.. I too read that sticky about casting and Kudos to blacksmithden for all the great information..

It gets more interesting as you go, esp. as you get into bullets/ammo that is better then what you can buy, or you get into the real accuracy stuff like cast bullet benchrest shooting. Harvesting live game is another milestone you will celebrate, anyone can shoot a deer with factory ammo or j-word bought bullets, but it's kinda special when you down a large animal with bullets you have made from the start, enjoy!!
And yes!! I think you may be addicted and when you have 4 diff. sizers on the go and 125+ molds, you may be as addicted as me.......

Hello: My name is hunter64 and I am addicted to casting bullets.

Seriously I am just like Ben, when ever I look at some bullet prices in the store I just smile and laugh to myself knowing that I can make thousands of bullets for the price of 1 box. My first buffalo I took with my own designed bullet that I had specially made for a .444 Marlin.

You know you are a casting addict when:

1. You never pass up a chance to get WW or any form of lead.
2. You have more than 2 ton's of processed lead in your stash and you are looking for more.
3. You have more than 20 different sizes for your Lyman sizer and you have some specially made that are not available in the store.
4. You have more than 125 molds and are constantly searching for that one extra mold.
5. When you walk thru a parking lot you are watching the ground for any fallen off wheel weights.
6. When you see an old home being torn down you ask if there is any lead pipe inside.

Feel free to add more.

well i guess i'm as guilty as the rest of you, i melted 3 5gal pails of WW and i have 4 more to go ,i have about 15 molds on order and a promelt and a lube-a-matic so if this guy isn't hooked no one is.

Glad to be of service guys. After just over a month of wood cutting, I'm done for this year. I still have a week of canning the garden veggies ahead of me.....a quick trip back to Ontario for a family event...then I'll have some time to do a serious casting thread. Sorry it's so slow coming, but there are things in life that just won't wait for me and need to be taken care of first.

I got the casting bug a while back. I don't have as many moulds as I'd like, but I do well with what I've got. My all time one day record was something like 1400 bullets for my 44 mag....with a 2 hole mould. I've got more bullets in the basement than I'll be able to shoot off in the next 2 years...yet....I still want to make more LOL. Casting is a hobby all on it's own. Glad to see more of you are carrying on with the "traditional ways" and getting into the "black art" :D That's exactly what I was hoping for when I decided to make that thread. Good job and a pat on the back for everybody. Just wait until you discover how much you can save making your own shotgun slugs and buckshot !!!! LOL !!!

We should have a lead gathering expedition sometime. Which will it be...the Walmart parking lot or Sears ??? There's probably more cars in a Walmart lot these days than Sears :D

Costco: Stay low and work fast, lol.

Had some multi cavity buckshot molds made up and they are fun to play with. I have had good luck with cream of wheat as filler and I have even played with a duplex kind of load. Buckshot and #9 shot in between as the filler, and of course no filler at all.

Good job Mikey and other casters!

Once you gather all the supplies things will get rolling along. I have found that getting the molds in Canada was the hardest part everything I wanted was out of stock, on backorder.

Now, I cast for everything I shoot, the only exception is rimfire and the best part is if I am running low on bullets, I can cast enough for a day to get by or a month if I have the time. Speaking of which, I am low on .30cal, buckshot, and 9mm, but thanks to a late summer heatwave here it is too hot for this fat guy to be out casting.

Actually i was wrong, I forgot that I upgraded to 2 new Stars with Air driven lubing, so make that 6 sizers...2 Lyman w/heaters, 2 RCBS, and the 2 Stars, some are set up for BP lube and the others for smokeless lube. I also have new molds arriving quite often, but the ones i look forward to the most, always take the longest to get here.

I got my NOE mold for my 444 yesterday. first casting was this morning and i'll be doing a short review on my results soon. to say the least im very happy with it.

Many of us have NOE molds in the works and really look forward to your report, most things are obvious when using a mold, but some things that i find important are: How close was diameter to what was advertised(.432"+), how round? Any signs of galling, at sprue plate screw?.Are you using BULL PLATE LUBE???

Any signs of galling, at sprue plate screw?.Are you using BULL PLATE LUBE???

Forgive my greeness Ben, but what do you mean by "galling at the sprue plate screw?
From initial observations, the sprue plate is in perfect mating contact with the top of the mold and hinges perfectly from the plate screw, as well as snugs perfectly shut with the ?closure screw? (terminology not up to snuff yet)

and yes im using the bull plate lube. i apply it with a q-tip while the first casting is still in the mold and wipe off the excess. i reapplied it once halfway through casting 120ish rounds and i had absolutely zero lead smear happening.

On all molds, esp. aluminum ones, watch for metal wear on the top of the block around the sprue pin, Lee is famous for this as they use very soft alum. If you are using Bull Plate or a graphite lube in this spot you should be okay....Ben

Wait till you guys upgrade to a casting machine. Then things get fun as you can make many more bullets in way less time with way less effort. Casting bullets is not a hobby it is a disease that is very hard to cure if it can be cured at all.

Every once in awhile I come across a new shooter and almost all of them are young people and they ask me why I want to shoot cast bullets out of my rifles and handguns. My answer to them all is always, because I can. Very few of them get it.

Probably thirty or forty years ago I read a report about bullet casting and it said then that bullet casting is only for people who want to do things right. I have never forgot that. Anyone can cast bullets but to do it right takes much time and practise.
