Adding a pistol grip on the SKS

What is the best way to add a pistol grip to the SKS rifle?

I do not want to put it in a full polymer stock like ATI, Tapco, Archangel, etc.

I have seen some SKS on this forum owned by CGN members with original stocks and with a pistol grip added.

Tapco used to make a single pistol grip add on for the SKS but discontinued it. Now that there is nothing specifically designed for the SKS, I think I need to get creative.

I was thinking an Ak47/74 pistol grip would work with some tinkering. Any other suggestions?

Anyone with experience?

I can't actually help with sources for an SKS pistol grip - I haven't seen any such thing in my travels through Canadian retailers. I don't know if the pistol grip would be an ITAR-controlled item, but I suspect it would be.

Have you considered carving one out of wood? It would probably be a lot of work, but you could get a great fit, great look. I imagine it would take some thinking for how to mount it.

I recall reading about someone putting a Hogue AK47 pistol grip on an SKS - it was on some American SKS forum perhaps? They did a lot of modification to the wood stock - basically ground away a good portion of the stock behind the trigger assembly. I wouldn't be comfortable with that myself, but I am a wuss when it comes to hacking away at my firearms. I haven't seen the Hogue AK47 grip at any Canadian retailers either, so I don't know if that is any better than looking for a discontinued Tapco grip.

Check ebay. There are listing for a mosin and ak pistol grips. Installation is easy as drilling a hole then screwing the pistol grip on.
