I just got a mosin nagant m44 i was wondering if anyone knows a good way to add a scope to it so i can take it deer hunting

There are "no gunsmithing" scope mounts available that attach to the rear sight base. You have to use a long eye relief scope with them because of the unbent bolt handle and mounting location. There are also kits that provide a bent bolt handle that usually takes a gunsmith or someone with a bit of knowledge and the proper tools to drill and tap the bolt.

You can get rail type mounts, they replacing the rear sight, you need some thing with a long eye relieve, like a scout style scope, this is a cheap way of doing it, or u need a bent bolt housing from west rifle, drill and tap the receiver, slight mods to the stock, universal rail and scope from interammo not so cheap..
There are a lot of repro Mosin Nagant 91/30 snipers out there that don't involve butchering historical artifacts...
By the time you factor in mount cost, optic cost, time and labour you could probably sell your M44, buy the repro snayperskaya, not be out much more money, and not wind up in the special circle of Hell reserved for people who bubba milsurps.

I vote long eye relief no gunsmithing rear sight mount. It's the cheapest and easiest method.
Every 2-3 months someone shows up with a recently bubba'd milsurp and finds out they just sunk $300 into a $200 gun only to find out the whole setup is now worth $150

Argh, I was trying to forget that thread!!!
Dilligaf, the point here is, by doing this to that Mosin, no matter how well the job is done, the modification is permanent and the rifle looses a lot of its milsurp appeal / integrity / status. From "one historically significant and intact military rifle" to "just another piece of cheap shooter" in a few minutes of drilling and tapping. Plenty of both around, sure, but... why take time and money to irreversibly turn one into the other?
It suprises me to no end that someone hasnt developed something for this type of thing, something thats not a scout mount but doesnt require drilling what could be a valuable historical piece, maybe something involving a grip or strap over or around the reciever, hmmm, maybe i needs to get one of my engineer friends to help me design something, haha.
