Greetings folks,

I have an old m96 swedish mauser that has had a bubba treatment... i got it cheap, and i love the 6.5x55 caliber, so i want to turn this beast into a little woods rifle.

This rifle has been drilled and tapped for a side mount scope base, as well as weaver bases on top.
As far as i know, theres no rear sight mount or anything like that for this gun, and theres no front sight either (barrel was cut).

I'm thniking that i will need to try my hand at cutting in a dovetail for the front, but i have no idea what to do for a rear iron sight.
I am open to suggestions, perhaps a tang mounted peep, but im posting here because i want others opinions :)

A front sight ramp would be a better option. Holes would need to be drilled and tapped.
If a rear open sight is desired, there are ones available to mount on the barrel. Again, holes to be drilled and tapped.
The receiver could be d&t for an aperture sight.
Personally, I wouldn't even consider hand cutting a dovetail for a front sight.

The choice between a front ramp or simply a dovetail with a short blade will depend on the height of the rear sight which will be determined by the size of the receiver.

You'll need to pick out the rear sight option which best suits you and your eyes and habits. But I know that for me any loss of speed in bringing the gun to bear is more than made up for by the faster sighting time when I've got a peep sight or ghost ring setup. The optimum option would be to mount it to the rear of the receiver such that it doesn't foul the bolt in any way.

I've seen a few adjustable rear peep sights which would be nice on there. Williams makes a nice small size peep with a ramp for height adjusting. But it's quite exposed. A nice option would be a service style rear with wings to guard the peep itself and avoid being knocked and bent.

There are rear sights that can be mounted to weaver bases. I've not experimented with them at all.

I saw a nice rear sight in the airgun forums, and it hung on to dovetails. I started a quick search for others...found lots for weaver bases. They seemed to be for the tactical crowd (lots on fleabay).

Front ramps can be soft soldered on the barrel also. The effect to your finish may vary...

I would also agree with BCRIDER. Find the rear sight you want first and then figure out how high you need to go with the front.

I think the easiest route would be to buy a matched set you like that can be drilled and tapped onto the barrel

I had one like yours and the gunsmith( prior to me owning it) soldered it on and it eventually fell off
