Looking back, if I was getting into service rifle for the first time as a civilian I would.
Buy a good reasonably priced 20" AR (Stag, RRA) for $1500+/- then I would get a Falcon Menace 1.5-5 (there are better optics but the price point can't be beat). There you go a competitive rig that will last most shooters well over a decade without problems for 2K. As well if you get bored you can sell it off for almost what you paid. Then if you want to avoid wind and play the short game you can buy a short barreled upper and run the same lower because the AR is the Mr potato head of rifles.
