Adjustable comb installation

Can anyone recommend someone to install a Graco adjustable comb on my Citori?

Ideally in Canada, although Maine would be OK if necessary.

I purchased one, but my woodworking friend who was going to make the cut doesn't think he can make it square enough. He's quite a proficient craftsman but is reluctant to do it.

Thanks for any suggestions.
 
Good luck finding someone in Canada. It's a little tricky but a good craftsman with the right tools can do this.

All your buddy needs is the proper jig to hold the stock square, a good bandsaw, a sharp blade and a steady hand. The saw cut gets sanded smooth afterwards. I'll see if I can dig up a picture of the jig I made for this purpose.

You also need good hardware. Graco is OK, I used the hardware form Devault Industries. Nice stuff.

I looked into having a Graco installed on a Citori a couple of years ago. I was going to have Graco install it as their price seemed fairly reasonable at the time. I ended up selling the gun as I bought a Beretta with an adjustable comb.
 
I have seen VDT'S Comb jobs, Gracoil installations, and gun stock shortenings.. He does a fine job. He also makes wooden cheek pieces out of walnut for Precision Fit Stocks..

One of the best in Eastern Canada, is Klaus Heptmeiyer. He is not far from Sherbrooke, Qc. He does a lot of work from both sides of the border. He is a certified Austrian gunsmith and stockmaker. He also builds guns, engraves them and makes stocks.

I've used Klaus several times with excellent results.

Yes Hyptmayer does excellent stock work. But it is just an adjustable Comb instalation. Would be kinda like getting Michelangelo to paint your Porch.
 
Klaus is excellent, though he may try to convince you to let him fit the gun to you rather than install an adjustable comb, this maybe worthwhile, though if it will require drastic alterations to the stock to make it fit you, the guns value will drop quite a bit because of the personalized wood.

Something to consider.

Personally I feel having a stock made for you or made to fit you is the best way to go, though not always an option or possible. Adj. Combs are more of crutch in my view.

An adjustable Comb is not only to help with gun fit but also it will help in adjusting POI.

Yes, this is why I am thinking of having one installed on my BT-99. I need about 1/8 to 3/16 cast off according to the testing and patterning I've done. Naturally, this need has assumed far more importance than it probably actually has in practical terms. The one thing that is holding me back from making the change, however, apart from the usual lack of funds arising from finding neat deals for shooting components, of course, is the worry that using an adjustable comb to correct this might lead to tilting my head. Makes me think that an adjusted stock might be the better idea, but I understand that a stock bent using hot liquids or heat gun can straighten eventually. So, I keep dithering along with the issue and thinking maybe I should adjust it where the stock mates with the action. Sure would like to hear a final answer on this one someday.

POI can be adjusted by altering the stock, without an adjustable comb.

Klaus will remove wood where the wood meets the receiver on the top or bottom to raise or drop the stock. He does good work and has a patterning board outside his shop, you will get the POI you want without an ugly comb.

Of course it can be a permanent alteration, so you should know what you want.

Adj. combs are for the indecisive or those who may want to sell the gun later.

The majority of top level competitors in a majority of the clay shooting sports, use fixed stocks that have been made to their specs.

A friend of mine had a stock bent by Stewart Newby, I think he is out you way nowadays, anyway, the stock was a thin little walnut thing over 100 years old on a old cogswell and harrison SxS, it was cast for a left handed person and Newby was able to bend the stock the other way and actually put a right hand cast on it.

He uses steam I believe and didn't damage the original finish.

Pretty cool really. It has stayed that way ever since, it's been about 15 years since it was done.

Perhaps you could look him up in B.C. I am pretty sure that's where he moved to. Could be wrong however.

I had some recoil pads installed by Klaus Hiptmayer. He is excellent. When having a stock fitted don't rely only on a patterning board. Depending on your shooting style you may have to use a stockmaker who will look at the way you shoulder the gun and what shooting style you are using when shooting clays. You may shoot at a different POI when shooting moving targets. Some stockmakers won't fit a stock until their client has acquired strong, consistent shooting mechanics.
 
Two thumbs up for Klaus! He has worked my stocks and of many top shooters for over 25 years. He can also make you a perfectly fitted stock from a blank. He feeps a few blanks in stock.

90% if not more, of the top European and World shooters all have fitted stocks. Often at a Euro or World Championship there are two or more stockmakers on site. They will measure you and cut you a new VERY NICE stock in less than an hour. You will need to have finished (oil etc) by someone.

I have seen some hot oil bent stock need redoing after a number of years.
