Adjustable Gas blocks?

Whats the benefit of an adjustable gas block? I'm guessing reduced recoil? Faster cycling?

Heard from a guy thats in the know that an adjustable gas block is required for a good 3gun AR.

This correct?

I'm an AR noob so I don't know where to look for info. Any GOOD resources out there? Books internet links - something that's more related to 3gun stuff. Not interested in being a Joe Socom wanna be guy.

To reduce gas pressure from maximum to shoot hot loads and increase to shoot reduced light loads so cycling is consistant regardless of load - provided correct buffer weight and spring tension matches ---
