I was just thinking the same.
For hunting purposesother than varmints a 4-12 is a little overkill.
3-9 would be max for myself, and I am actually inclined to go with a smaller lighter 1-5, or 2-7 these days.

I would buy the AO, even if your 7MM will be used only for long range shots, beacuse one day you might sell the 7mm but keep the scope for something else like a 22 target/varmint rifle or a 222, 223, 22-250, 308, etc. The option of an AO is needed for clear focus when using a rifle for a variety of ranges. Even at a close range you can keep it on 12x and use the AO to focus. It's a very nice feature if you are going for head shots on small game and varmints, or need to pick a chest shot between branches and cover on larger game.
I find AO scopes need fiddling with the AO to stay clear. Standard scopes without it dont' seem as fussy. I would avoid it like the plague for any winter hunting. Its bad enough when the power adjust is stiff in the cold, but having to turn the AO would be worse. I'd save the AO for summer range use or summer varminting.
i have a vxi 4-12 on my 300 win which is my go to hunting rifle.. i love it. good investment. plus i ran my gun over this year with my quad missed the scope but the hit it took flying off the front rack would have knocked any scope out of zero but not the trusting old leupold
For hunting, no on the AO.
For sole shooting at the range, yes.
For hunting and shooting at the range, again, no.
One more thing to pizz around with if trying to get up on fur.
Remember to keep your scope on the lowest power setting when
out hunting.
Usually there is more time to set up for a longer shot.
Hard to focus fur on nine power when the animal is close.

A O is for when you have time to play around. The vx1 4-12 on the 7mm is a nice setup IMHO

For anything over 10x magnification I want parrallax adjustment of some sort.

Parallax adjustment is for removing any discrepancy between the reticle plane and the target image plane. It is usually accentuated at magnifications over about 10x, and is worse the closer the target is to the rifle.
Jordan Smith is correct. On a hunting rifle, you don't need it. I leave the scope at a lower power setting( 4-6x), where I don't need AO to have a clear image at any distance. If I need to take a long shot (100 yds plus), I can turn it up to 10-12x and at that range, a non AO appears focused from there to infinity.
