I have a 1911A1 with a set of Meprolight fixed carry night sights. The point of impact is about 4" low at 10M.

I was originally planning on filing the front sight, but more recently have been considering installing a shorter barrel link instead. Is this a valid way to solve my aim problem?

Don't go messing with the barrel link to adjust the POI. It will affect the lockup and can put too much stress on the slide locking lever pin causing it to fail.

Depending on the front sight you can mill it or replace it... Don;t mess with the link that has more to do with the lockup and way the gun cycles.. too tight and you can wear the lugs and rails or crack the slide or rails.. To loose and you will have ejection problems, and will wear the lugs and eventually cause the slide or barrel to fail...

try calling Meprolight, which I beleive distributed by Kimber, maybe they put the wrong configuration ( rear/ front sight)

+1 - leave the link alone - it's about function of the action, not about sighting in.

Try some other ammo too. Hotter loads might be more to your point of aim.

Sean makes a good point.. What are you shooting for ammo.. A front tennon sight and installation is 25-40 bucks depending on where you have it done.. They usually make several sizes.. I missed the night sight part on the first read...

Thanks for the advice everyone. I've come to the conclusion that I'll try a load development series in the pistol to see if upping the pressure will get me closer to the ballpark. If that fails, I do have a file and some shim material in my toolbox.
