Just got an XD40 of Pete1 and loving it.

Question though, its shooting to the left and low, consistently. I am thinking I need to adjust the sights.

What is the recommended procedure for adjusting the front and rear sights and are there tools to help?

the gun is fine you are just jerking the trigger...
what kind of sights are they? usually you can adj. the rears but the front stays put.

So the sights come from the factory dead on and I don't have to adjust them? I seem to be able to consistently group left and down. I have a consistent grouping on my 1911A1 with the iron sights, so I know that I am reasonable shot....

P.S. They are factory sights...

Mine came right one, but thats not to say yours may not be off. I'd fire the pistol off a rest for a couple of groups (even just beding over a sand bag) to double check that its not you. The sights are in a dovetail, there will be a small screw down through the top of the rear one. Loosen it off 2 or 3 turns, get a small brass punch and drift the rear (lightly) the direction you wish to move your group, tighten the screw and test fire. It's trial and error and you won't have to move it much. The only way to raise the group is to either file the front sight lower (so you raise the muzzle for the sight picture) or get another lower sight. If you call Springfield and tell them how low your shooting they will probably send you a new sight.

NOTE. If the rear sight becomes loose, it will shift around and sit low in the mount causing you to shoot either left or right and low. (my 1911 was bad for this, drove me nuts till I noticed the screw backing off)

If you'd like to know just how little you need to move the sight (all measurements are in inches):

(Sight Radius) X (how "off" it is) / (distance of target) = adjustment

Example:

6.0125" X 3"(left of bullseye) / 1968.48" (25m) = Rear Sight gets adjusted .009" to the right.

.009" is barely noticeable so I'd use a mechanical pencil to mark it then move it about half the width of the line (yes, that little can have a dramatic effect).

Good luck!
