I have a Remington 700 ADL and want to change to a BDL bottom. Does any one know if the bottom metal and mag kit can be bought here in Canada . It is in 222 Rem. , So it would be short action with small bolt face. I know Brownells have them but would like to buy Canadian. Also has anyone changed over and inletted their old ADL stock to make this work. Thanks Bob

You will also need a magazine box - or alter the one you have.
The BDL units appear in the EE regularly, although most seem to be matte finished.

Yes I was on Brownells and the mag box comes with the kit. The USA price is quite high and with our exchange I don't think the conversion would be worth it. That's why I was wondering about a Canadian supplier. Add all that with a new or used stock and $$$$$$$. Will keep my eye on the EE for now. Thanks Bob

If you are capable of inletting the bottom metal, that's all you really need... the box can be shortened** and the spring and follower installed into the floor plate.

When the barrel and action and bottom metal are assembled with tight screws the magazine box** should be able to be moved easily... it should not be pinched tight between the action and trigger guard assembly.

I am a carpenter by trade and have chiseled a lot of holes in door locks and routered a lot of hinge recess but to inlet a stock I'm not so sure. Willing to give it a try to save the price of buying a stock. If I find the parts I'll post the before and after pictures for the work.

I did my Remington 700 stainless steel ADL model, with synthetic stock mountain rifle profile. Purchased a 700 BDL bottom metal/trigger guard and box magazine from a CGN member and cut out the synthetic material with my dremel tool. Took a bit of playing with washers and the stock screws in order to get things all bolted back together but in the end it all worked well. Not sure if cutting out the stock material weakens the stock or not as the stock is fairly flexible to start with but point of impact did not significantly change. Only problem is the purchased bottom metal/floorplate trigger guard is black aluminum and colours do not match the rest of the stainless steel of the action. Doesn't bother me but if you are picky, be advised. lolol
The original owner of the floor plate assembly changed his rifle over to a removable magazine so this stuff became surplus to him.

Im thinking about taking it on. I have found a stainless bottom metal assy.(did not buy it yet but would like to find a blued one in a short action for 222 Rem. The only thing Im not sure of is : is the floor plate drop down cover the same size as the frame or is it a bit larger around the perimeter to hide the cut out edges of the stock?

I've done it. It is easy enough. You will find that one of the action screws will be too short (the one at the front). I made one from a fine threaded high grade bolt; turned the head down, and shaped it to fit the countersink, cut a slot for the screw driver; fit it and cut it to length (if it is too long it will extend up into the action, and the bolt will not close), polished and blued it. Good looking job. If it is .223, the ADLs never fed that great; the BDLs not much better. Box magazines are expensive, but were I to do it again, that is what I would do. I think mag-pul makes one for the 700. Not cheap, but not too expensive.

No, you need to fit it a bit at a time. BTW, the "stainless" one is the one I got. It is not stainless, but aluminum with a stainless finish on it. Beauty is only skin deep.

Okay I gotta wade in here. As much as I love learning and playing with a Dremel Tool, it can get rewarding and also get sloppy.

If you really cannot find a set of 223 bottom metal in factory painted aluminum, I can sell you a set and a black SPS stock for $100 and mailing. That way you keep your ADL factory original and recover some money out of this so called upgrade to you. Doing the work yourself is fun but it devalues that ADL set up that someone out there will Happily pay you for.... ADL related kit can be pricey at the best of times because it’s so rare to find these days. I do realize that I have made mistakes and fzcked up some nice stocks in the past in the name of learning and upgrading. Anyways if this arrangement can be of help, I’m happy to assist. If you wanna have at this learning project.... then by all means Dremel away!!

Cheers, Barney
