I'm considering getting a Tikka soon, just wondering what are the advantages of stainless over conventional steel for barrels?

I did read somewhere that stainless is not recommended for extreme cold shooting environments - I don't know if that is true or not.

I've always had milsurps so the stainless steel arena is kinda a big unknown zone for me. Please enlighten me - thanks.

Stainless is not as strong as chrome-moly when it comes to blow ups. The biggest advantage of a stainless barrel I think, is less worry about accuracy eating corrosion from the elements and shooting. I have been installing as well as using stainless barrels since the early 70's. I hardly ever install a chrome-moly any more.

Is there anything that can be applied to the outside of the ss barrel so it's not silver and shiny?:)
I like my barrel to be non 'eye catching'.

You can sandblast and wire brush with a soft stainless brush a nice dull finish or glass bead the surface or spray paint it with a satin clear coat... or you can blast a pattern...

Met a gentleman at the range who puts heat shrink tubing over his barrel and sets it up with a hair drier. Looks good and keeps the steel like new on the outside. Probably holds heat in a bit longer.

Heat shrink tubing ...... that's a unique way to do it. Teflon coating, I'll have to ask about that one. Thanks guys.

I just spray my stainless barrels with flat black tremclad paint. It works and is cheap - removes glare etc. But needs renewing now and again - easy to do when cleaning the rifle. Appearance not critical for me, as they get carried a lot, banged around some.

Ok, I worked a sand and glass blaster for four years doing paint application on turbines; we were never taught how to do patterns for obvious reasons: How was that funky pattern made?

A plastic webbed sheath is placed over the barrel. It creates the pattern when you blast..

Barrell

Had a Rem 700 barrelled by James Hart www.hartbarrels.com in premium stainless and he had it blued for me, very nice job think it cost $60 extra but thats a few years ago.maybe he can help, very nice people.

There are a few factory methods for coloring SS. Take a look at the Remington XR-100 in my sig for an example of Remington's plasma-deposited somthing-or-other, and the Ruger for an example of their 'target gray' finish.
