I've been researching and am the stage were I'd like to try my on build. From what I've read and viewed parts seem to be readily available and reasonably priced if you live in the states.

My questions for those of you who have gone through this are:

1) Do you save a lot if you build your own ( In Canada that is ) ?
2) Can you have most of the parts shipped to Canada ( Legally) shipped from the states ?
3) What Canadian suppliers do you use for parts ?
4) How does the end product compare to a factory made ?

Thanks for all your advice

you will likely not save any money given how inexpensive some AR's are, but if there are specific parts or features you want that would normally only come on a high end gun, then you might save by having decent parts without high end on the rest of your AR with just the one high end part.

you can have many parts shipped from the states legally. Brownell's is the easiest. Each order must currently be under $100, although that is going up to $500. No lower receivers this way, and some other parts will be restricted too.

One shot tactical and questar were the best Canadian suppliers I found. Make one big order of the parts you want to save on shipping would be my suggestion.

My end product is fine, basically it is as good as a factory rifle with the same parts would have been. I didn't save any money at all though.

If I had it to do again, I would have just bought an NEA rifle. The build was fun, and not difficult though.

You can save money building an AR on the grounds that what your looking for as an end result is not available on the market. Example being you buy a basic good quality AR for 1800$ and then it costs you an additional 1000$ or so to replace the handguard with quality quad rail, replace the stock, add a quality trigger etc etc etc. So sometimes buying a factory built AR can be more expensive than building.

I built my custom AR for about 2500$ taxes and shipping all in less the price of the scope and I used all quality parts.

The best advice I can give is make sure you research all your parts, my gas block was pushed ahead .033" due to the profile of the barrel being designed the way it is and it caused my rifle to short stroke making it a bolt action. Little machining to the gas block and problem was solved.

My parts came from all sorts of different source, some of which include Questar, Alberta Tactical Rifle, Canadian Tactical Cowboy and off the EE here.

Answers to OP questions: 1. NO 2. NO 3. See retailers in top banner of this forum (and Brownells) 4. Depends...you get what you want but that in no way means the quality will be better. If it's your first AR I say buy it already made.
