Advice for replacement for rear sight on Savage Model 42.

I hate the factory rear sight, shooting consistently 2-4" high no matter the setting, it's weird. I would prefer a ghost ring or a wide peep sight. would it make sense to get the picatinny rail and put a ghost ring or peep sight onto that or might something else be better?

Here ye go. Install an EGW rail on 'er and put on the red dot sight of yer choice.

Not exactly sure what you are looking for here.
I asked skinner if they made a rear sight for the savage 42, he did. So I ordered one. I have it currently set up as a ghost ring without an aperture insert.
There is no replacement for that awful front sight.
