Advice for the shotgun curious

Yeah, I'm sure the requirements/needs are not the same from one hunting location to another... or depending on the game you're after...
- But I'd be curious to know how many people actually do change chokes on their shotguns?

I've had one (maybe two) shotguns with removable chokes over the years... and other than trying them out for patterns initially... Once a choke got put into a barrel, it kind of stayed there, and only came out for cleaning/lubing.

Beside, fix chokes are a good excuse to buy another gun ;)

I have shot way more 12 ga and pistol than center fire rifles , over 60+ yrs.
Most used was a older model 101 on the farm, no range work. it was a sheet gun, great on magpies.
Than I had a well used frenchi semi auto that I had come in on trade and that was used for about 20 yrs.
They always worked 100% I have had Beretta's SA , and some expensive O/U , They are great, But the old ones did the same thing for a fraction of the cost.

Probably not often, I would only bother changing chokes if I switched my ammo brand for some reason and things really changed with patterns. I tend to buy 12g ammo in bulk when I see a deal so my chokes only come out for inspection and a clean.

Any excuse is a good enough excuse to buy a new gun as I see it lol.

In the guns equipped with chokes I change mine often. In my 10ga bps I use an IC choke for bbb steel or t shot for geese over fields. Mod for #2 steel for ducks on the lake. Turkey choke for turkey when I feel like lugging the Beast around and full choke for buckshot. Makes the gun much more versatile than my sxs 10ga which I had the chokes opened to mod/mod. It can basically do everything the bps can with its changeable chokes but the chokes allow a distinctive advantage with certain loads for certain applications.
Same is true for my Beretta a400s and 1301. For instance my new flavour on the skeet field is my 1301 comp. With an Ic choke it smashes clays on the skeet field and patterns steel very well for ducks. Put a mod choke in and it's a great mid range scattergun for small game and throws flite control wadded buckshot very tight to 30 yards. Full choke it's a great crow killer and lastly a turkey choke tightens the patterns right up for ruining big birds face out to 40 yards
I still have a bunch of fixed choked sxs guns and singles that pattern well and work for most things but the advantages are clear with removable choke tubes.
Plus it gives gunnies something to spend money on and argue about which is better lol

Once my hands/shoulder hit a 50's vintage Browning Superposed Lightning 20ga my search was over. Choked imp cyl both barrels, his anything I need it to.

While I am an avowed SxS enthusiast, same here. I have a 20 gauge SP from 1953 and it's a near perfect gun. And I have some pretty nice SxS for comparison.
