Okay, so after much deliberation, I think that I have decided to go with the Savage 93R17 - FV (heavy barrel, blued, synthetic) for my first rimfire. As opposed to more expensive models, to save money to put towards a good hunting rifle later down the road. Does this sound like a good idea? If so, then I was hoping someone could give me some advice on which scope to put on it. (preferably not too much more than $100). Also hoping someone with this rifle could let me know which ammunition they have found worked best? thanks for any input!

If the synthetic one floats your boat, go for it. I personally never liked the feel of the stock. Too "wiggly" up front. I was deciding between the -GV version (solid wood, blued heavy barrel) and the -BV version (laminate, blued heavy barrel) myself.
The -BV won :D .

I've topped mine with a Tasco 2.5-10x42mm. Decent scope, just no idea what they're worth these days.

As for ammo, so far mine likes Winchester, Federal Premium V-Shok and CCI hollow point. The Winchester's and Fed's are pretty much tied for 1st, with the CCI's 2nd. For some reason, I have some CCI 20gr FMJ's . No good for varmiting, and no good for target work either. Doesn't group worth a damn outta my Savage.

(E)

I've got the same rifle (93R17FV) and the only thing I didn't like about it was the trigger, so I shimmed it.

Shoots constant bugholes now, but only on very calm, minimal caffeine days:). Dead gophers at >200m is not uncommon.

I also own a 93R17FV, for a scope I put the bushnell "super 17" 3.5-10x36 on it, and it seems to be holding its zero perfectly ( +/- $100.00). I've tried Hornady, CCI, and Federal so far (all 17gr) and the Federals shoot the best out of mine. When you get the rifle, check that the barell is floated all the way to the reciever, mine was touching the stock forend and was stringing groups pretty badly until i figured out what it was. It will now shoot Federals sub-moa at 100 yards very consistently.

Thanks for responses guys! really helps in my decision making. Any issues with the synthetic stock?
