Advice needed on airgun purchase!

Just returned a piece of junk Daisy Red Ryder to TSC and am looking for a reliable pellet gun to replace it. Do not need bigtime Fps.

It is for my 9 year old nephew, I need to keep the price down...$100 to $150 would be great, definitely under $200.

Can I get anything that will not break in a week?
Would like a wood stock and actual "iron" sights if they exist anymore...

I've been looking at the Beeman's and Crosman's at CT....

I would recommend a Crosman Pumpmaster 760. My grandfather gave me one when I was 9yrs old, still have it and it works great. I have put tens of thousand of bb's through it no problems. As a kid the FPS was like a bullet in my mind 5-6 pumps would fly far and hit hard!

PS-I think you can buy one for under a $100. Buy two!!

I've herd good reviews on the Hammerli 490 Express Air Rifle. its 99 bucks at most places and all steel and wood. and the Canadian hunter is susposed to be good copy of the dianna24 for around 99 bucks also.

I got my son a Diana when he was 9. It still shoots as new and looks the same after about 2000 rounds. Buying quality only hurts once!!!

The Hammerli looks very similar to the Beeman that I was looking at...

Seems like most of the sights are plastic nowadays...

Go used, most of the new cheap stuff is junk.

Either a Diana 24, HW30S, or Slavia 630/631. All great rifles that can be had for under $200 used.

I found a Diana model 23 the other day, great little kids gun. I was going to get my son a Red Ryder for his first, but I think I'll start him off on something that his kids can shoot: the Diana.

I totally agree with Grantmac.The HW30S would be the cadillac of the three.The Slavia is a sweet rifle,but may be a bit too long and awkward for a nine year old.I never owned the Diana 24,but have heard a lot of good things about it.any of these three would be way better all round over any of the Chinese models.

I got my slavia 630 at 10 and it fit me well enough. I was the envy of my friends, I could actuallt hit what I was aiming at, and my gun looked nicer. IMHO it was really well built.

Have a couple myself and they are really accurate.With a tuneup and some quality molly paste,they are even more smooth.

For a 9 year old the Baikal izh-61 is great. The stock is adjustable, it's a 5 shot repeater, it's light and it has one of the greatest triggers available. It's very accurate so it's great for adults as well.

Those little Slavia's at Home Hardware are great, 495 fps and have nice wood and metal for about $100.

Would a 9 year old actually be able to break the barrel on a Weirauch, Diana or Slavia springer? My buddy had a Crosman 760 pump when we were young and it was awesome!!!

Actually, my son couldn't do it when he first got the gun which was great because I had to be there for him to use it. This offers another level of safety when first starting out. By the time he could load it himself, he understood the ACTS & PROVE safety rules well. As far as some of the other posters referring to "repeaters", I am not keen on them for young people. I feel more comfortible if a 9-10 year old must stop to reload after each shot as it is too easy for them to loose attention to details like remove finger from trigger after shot...

My friend had one of these about a year ago, and it was not very good. They probably dont make them like they use to. From recent experience i would not recomend them. I would however highly recomend the hamerli 490, they are accurate with a decent FPS. my .02

Heard good things about it back when I was on airgunforum,.... just make sure that no one opened the box. Walmart guys and customers alike dry fire the airguns for fun.

The winnie can also be upgraded with a new spring from what I remember to make it a 1000x from the 500x, however you will have to register it. Don't know how good the scope is though.
