Hi guys a bit of a newbie here. I've been offered a mid 2000's colt 1911 45 s/s gold cup trophy. I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but I've been told by the owner that it's mint and been sitting in his gun safe for a few years. He said he brought it brand new and has fired about 100 rounds. He want's about $500 for it. Does this sounds like a fair price if mint. Also I was wondering if it's easy to get a 22lr conversion kit as shooting 45's is going to fun but long term I would like a cheaper option to keep my wife happy Thanks for any help.

$500 would be an absolute steal for a mint s/s Colt Gold Cup Trophy.
So much of a steal you should be dislocating your elbow getting your wallet out to pay for it before he changes his mind.

Sounds like he's ripping you off but give him my name & I'll pay that exhorbitant price just to save you from making a mistake. Back in the real world, if it's as described grab it as fast as you can. That's well under 50% of it's current value.
There are several good 22 conversion kits around that will suit your needs. Kimber makes a decent one and if you want the Cadillac of kits go for a Marvel. Many others as well. The only caveat is that because production tolerances vary from maker to maker the kit may have a sloppy, good or extremely tight fit. If you have a local dealer you might want to take the gun to them & try fitting the kit on the spot to make sure it's good to go.

I think I'll make a point of going to view it hopefully tomorrow. I guess I'm lucky that he doesn't own a computer otherwise he might discover he should be asking more. That does sound like an excellent bargain. Speaking of 45's does anyone own a Remington R1911? There's one at the local shop for a bit over 600 bucks. I always wanted a 1911 but most are a little out of my price range and I don't fully trust a lot of the makes coming from overseas. Are they any good?
I have a Remington R1 and a Colt 1911. At $500 for the Colt, that may just be the buy of a lifetime. Get it quick! Nothing wrong with an R1, but you will kick yourself if you don't grab that Colt - especially that model.
I have handled the Remingon R1 and found it OK but it didn't really light my fire. As for imports, generally the Norincos function fine. They might be lacking a bit in the fit & finish department although from what I have read those aspects have improved as well. The guns I am really impressed with are the SAMs (Shooters Arms Mfg.) out of the Philippines.
Not only are they finished extremely well but the fitting of the parts is top notch. I bought two stainless Commanders, one in 45 and one in 9mm. In the 45 the slide to frame fit was as good as my Kimber Stainless II Targets and STI Ranger II 9mm. The 9mm SAM was ever better - no trace of movement whatsoever. They are the only 1911s that I have ever owned (and I've had a least a dozen of different ones of various makes & models) that absolutely needed a bushing wrench to get the barrel bushing out. They're fit that well. Accuracy has similarly been outstanding. Both are consistently 'in the black' performers at my club's 50 foot indoor range, good for a standard 1911, excellent for Commander length guns.
The best part is that except for the real fancy models they only run about $100-150 more than equivalent Norincos and are worth every penny of the extra. Plus you can get stainless versions if that turns your crank (not available with the Norincos). I'm not trying to slag Norincos but I do believe that these are overall a better value.
I have heard that Rock Island Armory 1911s (also made in the Philippines) are very good as well for a reasonable price but I have no first hand knowledge of them so will leave it up to others to comment on them.
Aren't they build on the same slide/frames? I thought Armscor made these for various makers (RIA, SAM, STI, AO, CD, etc). Obviously the end product could vary depending on who's putting it together, but the basic meat and potatoes should be consistent.
Kennymo, the Remingtons are built to a price but for the money they charge they are nice indeed. Fit and finish is nicer than the Phillipines offerings IMHO by a little but it's noticable.
I've inspected and shot a couple of Remingtons and liked them well enough to buy one as I thought they gave good value for the cost.

Is it possible that this is a colt gold cup slide on another frame?
Still worth the 500 bucks or more, IMO
