Advice needed on oversize mag release buttons((specifically sti)

Can anyone tell me how much length the sti oversize mag release button adds straight out from the grip frame? I'm looking at ordering the one with the paddle and an extended mag release from freedom ventures but don't know if I should get the .190 or the .265 for my 1911. I need help reaching it on the run but don't want it so long that I drop mags by accident.any info helps.
 
Have you tried shifting your grip a bit to hit the button, or thinner grips and a flat mainspring housing? If you are shooting with a high thumb grip, there is less chance of hitting an extended release as well.
 
I have stubby fingers, my thumb is nowhere close to the factory button as it sits. I have to shift my grip probably 25 degrees to reach it with a flick of the wrist and then get it back again. I'm more worried about my week hand depressing it if it's too long.
 
I have the same problem. I like the Ed Brown extended mag release. Not sure what the specs are on it but you can see the difference between it and the standard colt size here:

Here's my favourite setup. It's the Ed brown extended mag release with thin grips (Ahrends thin). With this combo I don't have to shift my grip at all to reach the release (and I have smaller hands).

I have the STI mag release button oversize on my Edge and it will likely cut you up as it does me. Wouldn't recommend it.
 
The degree of protrusion is just a matter of preference unless you want to shoot competitively. The amount it sticks out will not usually cause dropped mags when shooting opposite hand; but if you add a button of any shape, you will need to be careful when shooting with your weak hand. As a lefty I have the longer extended mag release on 2 guns and really like it - but obviously I don't release with my thumb - and I don't drop mags; however, I did drop them on occasion when I added an oversized rearward button. I have also seen right handed people drop mags when their weak hand grip gets to tight or close to the button. Bang, bang, oops! You can always grind down the button if you find it too long.
 
Thanks everybody I decided to give the Wilson combat unit a try instead because I had some other stuff to order from brownells too. And yes I will be using it in competition and after consulting with someone who has one it might be a little too big for my grip style.
