I'm in the market for a 556 NR for coyotes. I currently have 243 bolt gun but I would rather a semi auto for this purpose (I have a few AR mags also). Ideally I would get a Tavor or a Modern Varmit but those are out of my price range. I can afford a su 16 or T97. Is there any thing else in that range I should look at?
Thanks
Heft.

Save up for the Tavor, XCR, MR1, SL8 or something similar used, or do some reading on the Mini 14, and whether or not it's ok to use 5.56 in certain models.

Seem to be quite a few benelli mr1s for sale in the ee. Mine has been super reliable (uses the same ARGO gas system that benelli puts on its shotguns), and it shoots well. No issues with 5.56. Takes STANAG/AR mags, so you can load up 10 with LAR mags, or 14 with Beowulf mags.

...there's no additional mag restrictions with varmint hunting, is there? Serious question, I've never been.

I love my tavor. More than accurate for what I need. I even use it for gophers lol. A decent amount of aftermarket support for it now too. If you can find one for a decent price used I would pick it up. Though if you haven't used a bullpup before I would try one to see if its for you. The trigger is not too bad on them either. I tried a t97 recently and as much as it felt comfortable to shoulder and shoot, I couldn't even think to get passed the trigger. My God it was horrible. Dry firing it showed that it was spongy and had an unpredictable break. Didn't like it at all.

While it's nice to have something that also uses the AR mags that you already have, might want to consider the price of those mags vs how much more you may end up paying for a comparable gun that can use the same mags. Not that I'm comparing any guns here but I don't think it make sense to spend $300 more on a gun so that you can reuse $100 in mags...
