Hey everyone. I mainly deer hunt and am looking for a good .270 bolt action rifle and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a good .270 that won't break my bank lol
My local gun shop has a savage axis in stock as well as a trophy hunter, both new, but I am unsure if there is something else that'll be a better bang for my buck

Jack O'Connor edition model 70. If you're going to hunt with a 270, do it with the riflemans rifle!!!

I would look for a good used rifle if I was you, the 270 has been chambered by every maker out there. Instead of settling on lowest budget new, spend the same or close to the same on way higher quality used!!! Have you perused tradex?

When those Ruger American came out they were prices way better. I picked mine up for 269.99 from IRG and our dollar was pretty much on par.

Edit. Did I just see them for almost 500$ holy chit... LOL...

I'd look at a used Ruger

....:) Personally, I bought a USED Ruger 77 ( Tang Safety) and it was a great buy! And ,costs, hopefully under your budget price point. With 130gn.hand loads it shoots just under an inch at 100 yds.....They are fairly common here on CGN Equipment Exchange, and seem to run around the $650 price..... David K

A 270 is a fine caliber for what you want.

But you do need to define "break the bank" - it means something different to each of us.

I figure if I want a "half decent rifle" that I need to drop somewhere in the 800 to 1000 buck range without the scope - and that's just "half decent", not high end. And while that's still a lot of money, that's not "breaking the bank" for me.

If you are talking 300-500 buck range you have the Axis, Rem 783, Ruger American and Mossberg Patriot.

The Axis or 783 "without glass" would be at the lower end of that price range - with glass (factory glass) either of those models, plus the Patriot would be out the door for the top of that range.

A Ruger American with the (packaged) Redfield glass would set you back closer to the 700 buck mark.

Of the bunch the Savage has the worst trigger - most come from factory with a weight somewhere in the 7 to 8 pound range (most hunters "prefer" a trigger half that weight). The other three have their own versions of an Accu-Trigger.

If you prefer the look/feel of a Savage, I would at least move up to a model 11/111. Particularly if you can find one that's been on the shelf for a bit and still "priced that way" - it should only be 100 or so bucks more than an Axis and "value wise", it's way more rifle.

I have an Axis (amongst my collect of stuff) and my hunting buddy has a Rem 783. I got the Axis brand new, way cheap. If an Axis and 783 are priced the same on the shelf, I would go with the 783 any time if my budget for a bare rifle was just over 300 bucks.

So again - depends what will break the bank for you.

I like what I am reading on the .270 ruger american. The Jack O'connor is a real nice looking rifle. If I wanted to order online who is best to order from? As far as price and quality go?

This is good advice, search for a used winchester m70, remington 700 or a ruger 77 ect.

I'm not sure what your budget is but don't forget about the Browning AB3, (A-Bolt III),..and the Winchester XPR, rifle and scope combos,..(or just the bare rifle, no scope), these are Browning and Winchesters entry level rifles and are of pretty good quality. (If I had to choose between the two, I would pick the AB3.)

The AB3 comes with a 3-9x42 Redfield Revenge, (Redfields are Leupold),..and the XPR comes with a 3-9X40 Vortex Crossfire II,...or you can buy just the rifle and add your own optic. The AB3 also comes in a Walnut stock model
Yes the Browning and Winchester cost a few bucks more than some of the other budget rifles, but you are getting pretty good equipment for the price.

Also, as others have already suggested, you could pick up a very nice higher quality rifle on the second hand market.

I'm a huge fan of the .270 and a huge Jack O'connor fan as well. So I shoot a Model 70 with a pre '64action feather weight model.
So, that is my first choice for you. It may be a quite a bit more than an axis or Ruger American but I think the extra quality will speak for itself in terms of the rifles longevity... I also like the Ruger M77 which is a substantial quality jump from their entry americans...
I also reccomend any of the browning bolt actions. Savage also has a lot to offer when you take a step up from the axis.
This is not to say that all the entry level rifles won't do the job quite well but everyone has a line where budget is.
Buy the best you can.

As far as a scope. Put a vortex on it and you will be happy. High quality for excellent price.

Before making your decision, PM C-FBMI and ask for his recommendations of the best .270 rifle. He will provide you with information that is otherwise unobtainable, in the most colorful fashion imaginable, and will ensure that you will make the best possible choice. And be sure to mention Jack O'Conner!

I have had good luck with the 270. That said, my advice is find a rifle that fits you and comes to a shooting position fast without any wiggling of the head. Once you find a rifle you can pick the caliber. All mid calibers work about the same to about 300 yards.

Start shopping, and find out which one fits you the best. All the current crop will work and function.
