Advice on a handgun for my sister

Long story short. I was in a car accident in June. My little sister helped me out big time by babysitting my son every weekend and every day that my girlfriend had to work. So for her birthday I’m getting her pal and a handgun. I have a 650 already set up for 9mm, so I am going to get her a 9mm that way she can reload her own ammo. She has tried a glock 17 and liked it. But is there any other handgun that you think might be better for her. Thanks for your help

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think that Glocks are the best choice for beginning shooters. I think they should have something with a conventional saftey so that they get used to using it. Plus it's an added safety measure...just in case.

That said, the best gun for her is going to be the one that she likes the most. Take her out window shopping and see what fits her hand...better yet do some shooting if you can. There are tons of handguns out there, it's hard to suggest just one.

I would take a close look at the Taurus 24/7. They sell for a whopping $599.00, $51.00 more if you want a two tone. They are very nice in the hand and are the same size in all three of the calibres I've held them in, 9mm, 40 S & W and .45 A.C.P. I think I'm going to pick up one next month for myself!

The safety thing again. Keep finger off trigger until ready to shoot. Why must some people try to make shooting seem so difficult? Self importance? Safty begins in the shooters mind not in the pistol.
Safety on the Glock is simplicity itself, no fumbling around. Finger on trigger when engaging a target. At all other tmes finger outside of trigger guard.
Sheesh! Beginner this and beginner that, I'm so experienced so a beginner will not be up to being able to do what I, a very experiencded shooter, can do.
Is everyone watching me? Look at me! I have great experience!

A Glock 17 is more than fine. Your sister will love it and you won't regret presenting it to her. M&P? Not my cup of tea. Croation XD? Worst attributes of a few pistols blended carefylly into one, and it is ugly and your sister would be embarassed using it in front of others.
HKP7 or P13 are other quality choices.

Get her to a gun store and let her get a feel for the pistols.

Glock 17, CZ 75B, BHP, 1911, M&P, XD, Beretta, Sig, ect. Are all good pistols.

The biggest concern is that it fits and points well in the hands of the owner. If she tries a few she will notice that some guns will feel more natural than others.

Case in point. My dad has a glock 22 and when he shoots its dead accurate. Put it in my hands and the safest place to be is in the ten ring.

Switch to my 1911 and it's the opposite.

When I was at Milarm one of the guys did a test. He had me close my eyes and he handed me a 1911. He told me with my eyes closed to raise the gun and imagine pointing it at a target. When my eyes opened the sights were lined up perfectly in front of me.

Did the same with a glock and I was pointing at the floor. The angle of the grip isn't natural for me.

The point being that whatever make of gun it is much easier to learn to shoot accurately when the gun suits you. Rather than try to compensate for it and try to shoot the gun accurately.

+1 on the 24/7 the grip is pretty small and it will fit your "$650" bill ;)

also Steyr M9A1 is a good choice for someone with smaller hands, but it's little more (~$800)...

Anyone know who carries the 24/7 9mm in Manitoba?

Thanks

yea everything is great till you need a part to fix it :bangHead:

Good point, then buy a $3,500.00 Wilson and be done with it, right! For a first gun the 24/7 will do fine. It is a pretty simple gun and not much could go wrong and for $600.00 what more could you ask for?

Are you sure she doesn't want a revolver?
Something in .357 (and will mostly shoot .38 spec.) can be everything from mild-to-wild and if she's going to be reloading, she won't have to crawl around searching for brass.

The CZ's or Baby Eagle are good for small hands, but the trigger pull for DA can be a bit long. Steyr M9A1 is a very good choice, comfortable grip and a short reach to the trigger.

M&P's are also worth a look but I preferred the Steyr.

Revolver could also be a good, if different choice.

(I heard something about the newest XD's breaking some internal part, but haven't verified the information)

I have small hands, these are the following pistols which fit me well:

CZ 75 series
Glock 17
XD series
Walther p99
SW M&P 9

I really like the feel of the M&P, and that was with the medium handstrap installed.
